heya, I'd be interested to hear about your characters and their backstories.
I've only had Skyrim for a month and it is my first ES game, I played a few hours of Oblivion and never really got into iit, but love Skyrim. in that time I've had around ten characters, most of which were abandoned in an hour or less. My first major character was an orc named Ramsay, he was eventually deleted for having no real purpose or story behind his actions, and having his skill trees spread too thin and poorly planned. I had a high elf, also a Ramsay, who I lost interest in for reasons I can't remember. I had a Nord warrior, Stanmar, who I completed the main storyline with. I used him to experiment with heavy armour- dwarven was my favourite, he was onto Orcish when I deleted him. he was a Stormcloak.
I knew what I wanted in my next character- an argonian or khajiit, who would join the dark brotherhood, be a vampire but also fight for the Empire. An unstable creature prone to fits of violence, and possible Skooma abuse.
I had a khajiit first, but his save file corrupted half an hour in, so I made my Argonian. his name is Kurtis. not an Argonian name, of course- I couldn't make one I liked. but I think it suits him all the same.
Kurtis was an orphan, which explains his unorthodox name. he never met his argonian parents, and he has never been to Black Marsh. he was raised in Cyrodiil.
Kurtis travels to Skyrim for a different life experience, away from his cosmopolitan home in Cyrodiil. Unfortunately he is caught up in the Imperial ambush.
on the wagon he decides he quite likes Ralof, the only friendly person he has found since crossing the border. a friend amongst murderous Imperials. The only Imperial he likes at all is Hadvar, as hadvar doesn't seem to want him dead. When the dragon attacks Helgen, Ralof helps Kurtis, and Kurtis escapes with him.
he goes to Whiterun to deliver the news of the dragon attack. he expresses great indifference to the Bleak Falls Barrow quest, as he finds Farengar to be an unpleasant, arrogant individual who doesn't deserve Kurtis's help. instead he travels to Windhelm, expecting a city of people like Ralof, friendly, helpful and tolerant.Instead he witnesses the Nordic racism and cruelty. Ralof, it appears, was a fluke. While in windhelm, he hears about Aventus Arentino. He visits the boy, curious to meet an orphan such as himself. Aventus reminds Kurtis of the pain of being an orphan. Kurtis understands his sadness, his loneliness, his anger. he decides that anyone who mistreats orphans must suffer.
traveling to riften, he burns Grelod to death after witnessing her cruelty in person. He tells Aventus what he has done, so that aventus can return to the orphanage, and his friends. He decides to go back to Riften, remembering the man Brynjolf who had work for him. He does brynjolfs job and travels to the Ratway. killing the scum he finds there, he sleeps in a bed roll, and is abducted by Astrid.
Vasha the Khajiit is evil. he justifies the stereotypes against the Khajiit and Argonian people. Kurtis bears no hatred to the Khajiit, even for lawbreaking. Murder can be justified, if done for the right reasons. but Vasha is just evil. Kurtis burns him.
he decides to forget about Brynjolf and join the dark brotherhood, where he immediately befriends Veezara. All his life he has wanted an argonian friend, and now he has one. Veezara was given to the Brotherhood as a shadowscale, so doesn't know his parents, either. Kurtis loves his new family, especially Veezara and Nazir. He spares Cicero's life after understanding ciceros feeling of betrayal, although the fact that he injured Veezara pushes him nearly to the point of killing the madman. he spares him in a desperate attempt to stop his chain of cold blooded murder for someone else's reasons.
Eventually he murders the emperor decoy, thinking of when the empire tried to kill him for no reason. How Ralof, a good person, would have killed the Emperor given the chance. He nearly stops after seeing the penitus ocalutus smiling at him, talking about the food. He's smiling- a symbol of hope and friendship. but this assassination was for the greater good.
Kurtis is ambushed while escaping. he realises Astrid betrayed him. His Family was being murdered. in rage Kurtis slaughters his attackers, and makes his way to the Sanctuary. He goes into a murderous rage and viciously kills all Penitus he finds. When he learns of Veezaras death, he feels dead inside. the friend he longed for for so long, taken from him so fast, thanks to another he would call friend.
Kurtis kills the true emperor in a daze. He needed to avenge the death of Veezara. He needed to kill to channel the rage and pain in his life. He kills the Emperor but leaves his belongings untouched. This man was not evil.
He kills motierre next, still in his dazed, dreamlike state.
He restores the Sanctuary, but realises that the contracts hold no meaning for him. Murder happens for a reason, and Kurtis needed his own reasons now. he goes on hiatus from the brotherhood.
Kurtis travels for a bit to try to clear his thoughts. he thought Skyrim would be an enjoyable place to go, but since his arrival in skyrim, all he had faced was death, death, death. He considers joining the Legion, to fight for a cause, to have a good purpose, to make himself feel better about the things he did. When he sees Tullius, however, it's too much. he runs away.
he joins the dawnguard on a whim, and goes on his first mission. he thinks vampires are evil, so he kills them. when he meets serana, he is proven wrong. she seems almost human.
Kurtis falls in love with Serana. he realises the dawnguard would have him kill her. in an act of defiance, he joins the Volkihar vampire cult. Finally he has the power to fight back against everyone who would hurt him. he also has another Family. (still a member of the dark brotherhood, but not yet ready to return to the sanctuary).
that's as far as I am so far, sorry for the huge wall of text.
TL,DR: Kurtis is an orphan and has had a very painful life. Eventually the pain pushes him to the brink of madness.
