Is your company worried...

Post » Mon Oct 03, 2011 1:04 am

Thought this was interesting. I work at a massive communications company in Canada and was discussing Skyrim today with one of the younger managers at my work who plays SOME games on console. He mentioned that there had actually been concern amongst our HR department about the launch of Skyrim (which is also a crazy busy time of year for us). Apparently they are trying to figure out monitoring sick-days extra hard around 11/11/11 and are concerned about people not showing up to work.

He said it's the first game launch they have ever really taken seriously.

Anyone else think their employer is concerned about Skyrim's launch?

Well half the people on my University are worried about their results/social lives around 11-11-11, does that count?

Is your boss aware of the popularity of Skyrim and is worried about your or others attendance for work when it is released.

Mine isn't. I think I'm the only gamer at my company.

If I tried to talk to my boss about Skyrim, I'm pretty sure he'd say, "What's a Skyrim?".

Ohhhhhhh stupid me :banghead:

For some reason, I read the OP as in a possibility of Skyrim getting delayed

This.

(to sum up).

Essentially is your place of employment concerned about employees "disappearing" on or around 11/11/11?

School counts too I suppose, I just thought it sounded funny that a group of managers and older HR women were talking about how Skyrim could cause huge issues.

I am an older gamer and CEO of a small software company (engineering/product development software-not gaming) so it is a bit weird that I must balance my own interest in playing Skyrim with the possibility of losing production from good developers while they play Skyrim!

The Elder Scrolls needs to get big enough that we do in North America what they do in Japan for the Dragon Quest series - namely, the government asks the Dragon Quest publishers to only release new games in the series on weekends or the holidays for fear of so many people skipping work!

I work for a Hollywood special FX studio, so we have our own big budget projects and crunch times to worry about (we just finished a 3 week crunch period - thank heavens) - not to mention the many millions of dollars that ride on finishing movies on time! So we don't have the luxury of skipping work without consequences most of the time! But we were discussing Skyrim between the workstations a couple of weeks ago and our studio owner walked by, heard the word 'Skyrim', stopped, turned around and said with a grin while wagging his finger - "Don't do it."

"Don't do what?"

"Don't get sick in November."

Moral - having a gamer as a boss has its advantages and its disadvantages!

Love it! That's what I am facing as well. Imagine an entire country having to set policy based on a game... Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

By the way, anyone in Boston area into software development feel free to PM me. I can maybe help with some local job info that comes up from time to time.

Skyrim comes out on a Friday right?

well... my college only has classes from Mon-Thurs.

I will do one of these things depending on how sleepy I am Thursday (I have an exam the day before Skyrim >.<):

1. Not sleepy/ going nuts over the fact that Skyrim comes out in a few hours- go to Gamestop and set up camp for midnight release.

2. Not be able to stand the last few hours before Skyrim comes out so I go to sleep early to waste some time. Then leave home at the perfect time to get into Gamestop at opening time.

3....

4. Profit

My boss wears Velcro shoes because laces are too complicated. He, and the senior staff treats us floor staff like dirt. People call in sick all the time because they don't want to deal with the bull. Heh. They won't even notice.
