Your Computer Security Setup.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:13 pm

I always find this an interesting topic amongst similar computer enthusiasts. Im buying a new laptop shortly and i am currently looking for some advise and possible insight into YOUR computer security/tweaking setups on your computer systems? E.g. Internet security suits/tweaking utilities/etc.

I have OCD so i usually completely overkill my system protection.

Avast and Malware Bytes. That's as far as Anti-virus software. I have safe online habits(know all the dangers of the interwebs from Security+)

I had NOD32 back in 08... Is it any good or is the cool interface and design its only advantage? :)

I have used it since it was released - what 2 years now? - and it has never let me down. Mind you I only moderate when drunk and stay away from dodgy sites. :D

Microsoft Security Essentials, with the realtime scanner disabled. Common sense. Decent backups.
I haven't had any malware in probably about 4 years, but if I ever do, I can reformat and be up and running again within two hours.

They're not, and I have. About two years ago I had upgraded to 64 bit windows and like a [censored] never reinstalled my AV. After visiting a few shady sites, I found myself reinstalling windows again. I'll not go without an AV again. I've learned my lesson.

Unless this changed recently it has the best heuristic virus protection out of all antivirus programs.

Actually... http://www.tomshardware.com/news/hack-windows-security-snow-leopard,8704.html, it just has less viruses. Security and # of viruses are not the same.

That's the reason Mac OS X always falls first at Pwn2Own, as it has many security vulnerabilities, just not many viruses.

My security setup:

- Adobe Reader not installed
- Flash on-demand
- script whitelisting
- Java disabled in my default browser
- Avast! and Spyware Doctor

Microsoft Security Essentials. I run it all all Windows machines on my network (5 machines). Works amazingly.

Some basic antivirus that stays out of my way (currently NOD32), a decent router with (obviously) NAT, Windows Firewall when I'm using Windows (kinda redundant, though), and sense enough to avoid running things that might be infected. I've been computing for a pretty long time (about 20 years) and I've never had a virus that I didn't catch before it had a chance to infect. The worst malware I've ever had was a rootkit created and distributed by Sony. Without a doubt, a little bit of knowledge and common sense is the most powerful defense.

Actually... http://www.tomshardware.com/news/hack-windows-security-snow-leopard,8704.html, it just has less viruses. Security and # of viruses are not the same.

Yep, but good luck convincing the folks that have already drunk the Kool-Aid. I have nothing against Apple products, personally. Religion just isn't really my thing. ;)

My networking husband's knowledge and his 4 expensive, hardware firewalls that stand between all our pc's and the ISP router. That and common sense, constant back-ups, not randomly surfing the internet much and rarely downloading anything. In 15 years I've had one ad-virus (where ads keep popping up until it crashes your pc) that necessitated a re-install and that's it. If you back up a lot, it's not that painful to reformat/reinstall.

Since I use Windows7 now I let it do the anti-virus scanning on certain downloads, but that's all I have. I've tried some of the $100/free stuff in the past and they're all terrible (imo) for one reason or another, but certainly a lot better than nothing if you feel you need it.

- Java disabled in my default browser

Yeah, I do that a lot too. :)
