Your Crime has been reported

I have MCA 5.2 and Protective Guards mod. Why is it that whenever a guard kills say, a ruffian or a footpad in town, I get "Your crime has been reported?" Is this a game glitch or a mod glitch? Can it be corrected?

I got that rather consistently with MCA. Sometimes it even happens without the protective guards plugin. Seems that messing with guards can have unfortunate results.

Do you use any other mod that modifies the behavior, or anything else for that matter, of the guards? I've used MCA for years (mainly the 5.x versions, but currently using MCA 6.1) and have always used the Guards Patch and have never had this issue.

this used to happen to me with protective guards, then i realized that when in fight, if a guard joined the fight with me, it happened that in the movements of the combat i hit the guard instead of the enemy -.- have you checked that you're not hitting the guard by chance? does this happen also if you leave the guard and the enemy alone and stand back from the fight? :)

It can happen outside of that. I've been attacked by NPCs in towns and never even bothered to draw my weapon, still ended up with a crime report when the NPC died.

I chose MCA 5.2 because I like surprise attacks in towns, as well as, watching the brawls in town. Unless I type 'set mca_moreenemies to 2,' MCA 6.1 ends the brawls.

I'm not exactly sure what the cause of this problem is but I believe that it is caused by Protective Guards rather than MCA as I am not using the second of the two and am getting the same issue. Does anyone have a solution to this?

The problem can happen with either of those mods, or any mod that causes guards to join fights that they would not normally. It has something to do with the guard AI so far as I can tell...essentially a game bug. It's not something I've ever sorted out how to mod around, might be something for MCP.
