Your favourite in-game book?

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:30 pm

From any TES game. Yeah, I'm sure it's been discussed a million times, but I haven't seen it recently, so let's go.

My favourites are Response to Bero's Speech, for illuminating the schools of magicka (essential for a mage), Disaster at Ionith, for the insight into what Akavir is truly like, Fall of the Snow Prince for the Falmer, Spirit of the Daedra for the thoughts of a Dremora that aren't "Break and fall!" or "Back, nithing!". I also like the last page; "Man's Mystery - Man is mortal, and doomed to death and failure and loss.
This lies beyond our comprehension - why do you not despair?" Doors of Oblivion nicely describes the realms of Oblivion we've not seen. I also like A Surfeit of Thieves and Vernaccus and Bourlor for being good yarns with a touch of dark humour.

Oh, and who could forget The Lusty Argonian Maid?

When it comes down to classics, King Edward is a lengthy but very rewarding read - it just has such a grand scope that few other TES novels compete with. The Real Barenziah and its counterpart Biography of Barenziah are always interesting reads as well.

Very good choices. It's a real pity that King Edward was never finished. King Edward, although it doesn't mesh well with later lore, is one of the best stories-within-a-story that I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I was always a svcker for a good adventure story. I did dislike that it got all philosophical near the end, as Mara's talent lies in compelling narrative, rather than metaphysical debate.

ED: I feel I must clarify. When I say "Mara" I am of course referring to Marilyn Wasserman, one of the more prolific writers of Daggerfall's day (and a beta tester to boot!). Her name was the inspiration for the goddess 'Mara', and she goes by the name of 'Ramara' on these boards, hence my use of the term.

Yes, you're right; this has been done a million times! :P

But I like a lot of the books from the games, so I'll just say the ones of the top of my head: The Doors of Oblivion, On Oblivion, Immortal Blood, The Locked Room, The Argonian Account, Hallgerd's Tale, Vernaccus and Bourlor (sp?), Beggar Prince, The Horror of Castle Xyr, and damn loads others! Really there are more but I forget.

I don't find The Lusty Argonian Maid that great. Sure it gave me a short giggle at first but I don't see why everyone finds it hilarious....

I find it hilarious because it was not expecting something like that in a game book. All the other books are serious (or atleast the ones I read) and then suddenly something like this comes along. Besides I can't stop wondering how would it look like on stage.

Oh, and let's not forget Daggerfall's anachronistic, lore-breaking, racist, but admittedly funny http://www.imperial-library.info/dfbooks/b070_jokes.shtml!
