That's a pretty righteous list (Just like last time). I would have to add Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Mark Knopfler, Clapton, Nils Lofgren, Bruce Springsteen (seriously) and lots more.

Love all those guys, especially Knopfler. Like I said, I just know too much music to list them all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uuz_He-cDY8&feature=related (also with Omar in this video, and Deantoni Parks, a kickass drummer)

Surprised to see this one up here? You shouldn't be. He hasnt achieved legendary status because his music is still prety recent (in comparision with gods such as hendrix and van halen) however I urge you to purchase any white stripes CD and realise its just a drummer and Jack White on guitar.

Pssst, he uses other instruments both on stage and in the studio...

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoAXW30mMAg When I came into listening to music passionately. I was young and naive and dismissed Hendrix as overrated. However I am older and wiser now and Hendrix is the greatest guitarist because of his influence. The fact is that Jimi changed the landscape of what the guitar could do, and how it was used. Voodoo Child, the song in the clip showcases his talents much more than the trademark purple haze (Haze is excellent in its own right).

NOW MY PERSONAL TOP 5 Favorite Guitarists...

YES ITS GONNA BE METAL!!
(These are based on my personal opinion, basically my reccomendations)

5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sj3ec2cCaJw Now Ive listened to a million shred players, but they all seem to be simply playing at top speed without a great deal of style and emotion. To me Yngwie reigns as stylish and unique, though he was a notorious crab he was also an incredible guitarist and the clip in this video blows my mind.

4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axzRdFOYpqg His riffs were simple, yet groovy and incredibly original. His solos were technically and sonicly astounding, and who could ever forget those trademark harmonic squeals? GETCHA PULL!

3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS78Q1T8xa4 I could try all day, but I really couldn't ever say enough about Rhodes. Crazytrain, Mr. Crowely, Over the Mountain, I dont Know, ect Everything he did was stellar.

2.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIl-kndAduY&feature=related Why did I pick Ironman? EVERYBODY KNOWS IRONMAN! Thats right, everybody knows ironman the riff is immortal and for my money the single greatest metal riff ever created. Every Sabbath riff is fantastic, and Rob Zombie has been quoted saying "Every metal band plays black sabbath riffs, faster, slower, backwards, what have you, but Sabbath did it all." Iommi was the man behind all those riffs.

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TznBgoUFeY Believe it or not kiddies, there was death metal before Cannibal Corpse. The man who started it all was Chuck Schuldiner. The early Death albums are straight up raw nasty death metal. However its his later works such as the album Symbolic, and this song featured here that put Chuck on another level. Its some of the most brutal riffing you will ever here followed by some of the most beautiful solo work. Schuldiner... inventor of death metal, creative guitarist, and hell of a guy by all accounts. This is my personal favorite guitarist EVER and I think it is only because he chose to play death metal to a niche audience that he is not given the credit he is do as a musician. Least he is a god amongst his people. People like me.. THE METALHEADS!

Nice greenwarden. Never heard of those guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaIN13aDbCc. Gone but not forgotten. He influenced an entirely new approach to the acoustical instrument.

Dan Auerbach. Not the most technical, or fast, or flashy player, but plays with a ridiculous amount of color and soul, and writes some amazingly simple but haunting riffs. His little fills when improvising are awesome too.

Ah yes. I had to transcribe a couple of his solos when I was studying Jazz guitar at school. His son is a local musician here, and has rehearsed at my house before, as my roommate was in a band with him.

Thurston Moore

Glenn Branca

Interesting choices. Branca created some really interesting textures with his giant electric guitar orchestras.

Despite being a guitarist myself, and a dedicated musician, I don't actually find myself engaging in guitar worship all that often. Maybe it's just my over-exposure to a lot of it, but much essential "guitar music" bores me to tears. That being said, my favorites would probably be Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin even though I generally prefer progressive rock and classical to jazz fusion, these guys are just nuts.

Robert Johnson.

This. No-one can play like Robert Johnson. I'm confident that if you give an acoustic guitar to Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen or anyone else you care to mention, they wouldn't be able to do what Robert Johnson did.

It's a disgrace that this thread has made it to page 3 without anyone mentioning the marvellous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsZDcpxoV68&playnext=1&list=PL93BD54EC792B40D0. Happens every time this topic comes up. Shame on you all.

I'm not sure of the exact quote, but Jimi Hendrix was once asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, and his reply was "Ask Rory Gallagher".
