Your Favourite Guitarist

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:55 am

Lately I've been listening a lot of Led Zeppelin (though as I'm typing actually listening to M.C.R :celebration: ) and Page's riffs inspired me to create this thread :P

So, who is (are) your favourite guitarist(s)? :mohawk:

Personally I love Page, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Angus Young, Kirk Hammet, Kurt Cobain...surprisingly I don't love Hendrix (I admire his skills though but I'm not a huge fan of his songs ).

Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Josh Homme, Pete Townsend, Kyle Gass and Synyster Gates.

Does this extend to bass players? If so Larry Graham, Flea, Les Claypool and John Entwistle.

Just remembered a few more: Dave Mustaine, Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Eric Clapton (probably will remember more) are at the very least worth mentioned even if I'm not that into their music :)

I believe that's the British spelling. Much like Americans say "favor" where Brits say "favour" etc.

You beat me to it. Already has been made.

For me, I use to like Yngwie Malmsteen. I haven't listented to him in a long time. I love Slash, currently right now. Besides him, I don't really care for any of the new ones, I just don't recall anyone who stands out in this day and age now. I don't listen to alot of music as I use to in my younger days.

Back then, I liked Malmsteen as I said, Eric Johnson, Vai, Satriani, Mark Wood, (well not guitar but Violin) I also like from Savatage, Chris Olvia, for me, one of the greatest, Chris Caffery Al Pitrelli. I also like Alex Skolnick as well.

That's a pretty righteous list (Just like last time). I would have to add Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Mark Knopfler, Clapton, Nils Lofgren, Bruce Springsteen (seriously) and lots more.

Alright, music is my passion and Im going to put a ton of thought into this. The Worlds top 10 guitarists: (These are guitar players great in that the way that they have impacted the instrument. So in this list greatness is going to be based on status and contribution to the instrument.

10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ Queen played songs of all different styles, and Brian May rocked in every single song.

9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2nQZPC2uTs Simply the most underrated guitarist of all time.

8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7qpfGVUd8c Never played an unnecessary note. Played every necessary one, was member of the Beatles and wrote "while my guitar gently weeps (video feature).

7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMBvj20umQE Surprised to see this one up here? You shouldn't be. He hasnt achieved legendary status because his music is still prety recent (in comparision with gods such as hendrix and van halen) however I urge you to purchase any white stripes CD and realise its just a drummer and Jack White on guitar.

6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfdNRZbJvTw Listening to the Grateful Dead is just an incredible experience, I couldn't possibly put it into words. The music this man made can put a smile on your face no matter what life is throwing at you. Its pure enjoyment, and thats what music is all about.

5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9TGj2jrJk8 Stairway. That song alone puts him in the top 5, but Page played so many fantastic riffs and solos, that Stairway is just the icing on the cake. Anyone listening to classic rock knows his limitless talents.

4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWLw7nozO_U Stevie Ray Vaughn played the blues like no one else before him, and noone else since. Enough Said.

3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AscPOozwYA8 Everyone knows Eric Clapton. There is a reason for this. Whether its from his psychadelic roots in the power trio CREAM, his electric blues riffage featured in LAYLA or the softer acoustic hits such as the one featured in this video, Clapton can play something for everyone. A diverse and Talented guitarist indeed.

2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpRIYi721WE This man personifies the blues, and I would describe the sound of his guitar as perfect. Its smooth and full of emotion. I really cant say much more. The video will Speak for itself. It has to be experienced.

1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoAXW30mMAg When I came into listening to music passionately. I was young and naive and dismissed Hendrix as overrated. However I am older and wiser now and Hendrix is the greatest guitarist because of his influence. The fact is that Jimi changed the landscape of what the guitar could do, and how it was used. Voodoo Child, the song in the clip showcases his talents much more than the trademark purple haze (Haze is excellent in its own right).

Not if you are Canadian or English :whisper:

Probably Gilmour or Page. I like the guys from Radiohead for their creativity and the sounds they make. Coldplay has some spine-tingling sounds too like in "Death and All His Friends".

NO! Daniel Lanois! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVVJC_TDweA
