Don't feel bad, I haven't either. I don't want to listen to other people talking while I'm playing a video game.
My first online gaming experiences are from the early 90s, predating my involvement with the internet. I frequented all local BBS's (Bulletin Board Systems) and participated in several "door games" common to most if not all of them. I visited all "servers" every day I was able, playing a round of "Legend of the Red Dragon" and "Usurper" on each. I wasn't very good at Legend..., but consider myself our area's best Usurper player of that era.
I joined the internet via dial-up in 1997 and immediately searched for an Usurper equivalent. What I found instead was the beta program for Meridian59. It is indeed acknowledged the first "modern" MMO. And yes, it had a monthly fee once out of beta. I had a sort of love-hate relation with Meridian. It was there that I discovered I did not enjoy unavoidable non consensual PvP. As much as I enjoyed the game otherwise I knew I would jump ship as soon as a less PvP centric MMO appeared, and did so at the launch of Everquest several years later. That said, I retain a great many fond memories of Meridian, and feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves.
As to games like CoD and other "shooters", I never had any interest in those.
Another reason i disliked WOW, playing 40 man raids, and being forced to use vent, so instead of some nice silence between fights or even decent instructions during fights, there was nothing like the married people going into great detail of their six lives during a boss fight, it just not a need to know its a want to know and i didnt, nor did i care.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think my first online game was the classic Counter Strike. I wish I would also remember my kill to death ratio and how much I svcked then haha.
It was the Desert Combat Alpha mod for Battlefield 1942.
Played it at this LAN gaming place called Clan, long gone now.
Runescape. I spent hours at the computer playing that when I was 10 or 11. I eventually got bored and went back to my PS2. Still was fun while it lasted. Remember when my dad eventually let me use the chat in the game. I convinced him that I was mature enough to use it and I kind of was, but mostly just goofed around in the chat when I used it. My first online gaming experience where I bothered with the community was Earth Eternal. Still have great memories of that community and how friendly it was.
Doom would be my first, I guess. I had a friend back in '95 that had a couple of PCs at his house and we would play on his LAN. It was a fun experience even though I got my ass kicked all over the every single map!
The first Massive online experience would have been in 2001 when a few guys I worked with at Qwest (CenturyLink now) started talking about this game called "EverQuest." I got interested and eventually joined in. After a couple of year of playing, I finally found some like-minded players and we formed a Guild. We had one guy from Japan, another from Denmark, and I think one was from Brazil(?). We communicated through chat only, no voice chat back then. I always laughed because their English was so much better than most of us Americans
I like Pseron's workaround for all the other players in his online game:
I think it was Warcraft 3. I had played 2 before that, but never knew about multiplayer, being like 6 or 7. The original Runescape was big back in grade 6 at my school so that was another early one.
It was probably one of those tick based text games that were everywhere in the late 90's. I was a big jerk back then and troll people any way I could on those things. I remember tormenting this one guy from Russia because I think he destroyed a building that took forever to build. The reason I bring that up is my stepfather had come over for some reason and asked what I was doing. I told him and it blew his mind that you could do that near real time with which I said "Yep I can pick a fight with anyone around the world and leave them a gibbering mess." He said, "That's cool. Tell him I said **** you!"
Slayer, Snowbound, Halo 3, my 14th birthday back in 2007. That was a good time to be...
My first online game? Jeez, I don't like online gaming but...I think it was Halo 2. Hard to remember, though.
