I was a good guy on my first playthrough. I didn't steal, lie, or sandman anyone.

Fresh outta the Vault, I went to Megaton. Did a couple quests for Moira, got scammed by Moriarty, and saved Megaton.

On my first playthrough my very first impressions were, "This is boring. Everyone`s dead and everything`s destroyed. What`s there to see? Maybe 101 was it!" It was so quiet and bleak as might be expected 200 years after a nuclear war.

I wandered about Springville (springtown?) which is the first place you see. Dived behind a building when that talking radio floaty thing came along and after a while realised it wasn`t going to kill me. Then I checked the ruined houses and found that woman who shouted at me- so I left and finally wandred into Megaton.

Then it got interesting.

First fallout game I played, managed to completely miss Megaton, walking down the road to the Spring vale Elementary, killed a few raiders, then got Sham-powed by a Yao Guai.

I remember going to arefu for the 'blood ties' quest and on my way to moonbeam outdoor cinema (or whatever is called) was destroyed by a super mutant with a rocket launcher

oh and not taking the advice of avoiding the D.C ruins, in the end I tried scrambling up the rubble to escape super mutants, didn't end well

First thing I did was standing outside the vault, gazing at the landscape for several minutes. Then I went straight for Megaton.

I then went to Super Duper Mart for the Survival Guide Quest. Tried to take all the raiders stealth-like due to my poor weapons and lack of skill. Didn't really work that well. I managed to survive though, by eating everything I could find :P

After that I swam all the way downriver through the ruins. That way I contracted radiation poisoning for another Survival Guide Quest, and I got to Rivet City to get the bobblehead that gave me max intelligence (for max stat boost on level up).

Emerged from the vault after dark, completely missed Megaton, was hornswoggled by Bryan Wilks to do his quest in my vault suit for fear 438909283 people would die if I didn't. No ammo, no medicine skill for my very few stimpaks. Baseball bat against the ants with no melee skill. Died over and over and over.

I got a concussion from a Mutie somewhere in DC and thought my character was just sleepy. I walked all the way back to the Super Duper Mart to take a nap because that was the only bed I had seen and I didn't know about fast travel.

Missed the energy weapons bobblehead.

This is pretty much exactly what happened to a friend of mine. He got deep into the sewers with fire ants everywhere and no ammo. I had to beat the guardians for him using only a sledgehammer. Easier said than done.

My older brother had the game on his PC and was showing it to me. I was only mildly interested and became bored watching him play quickly. One day, I hop on his computer and start a new game. He's right behind me being obnoxious like brothers are and talks me through the vault, telling me stories of a few of his adventures out in the wastes. I finally get outside and the glare fades to normal. I slowly look around and BAM! Big green menu right in my grill! So I level up and start walking. Oddly enough, my brother is quiet now. I see a large pile of old crap to me left and keep walking. I notice a town to my right and head that way, not looting anything, just walking around.

Then it happened. The moment where I got hooked. I see a school that looks nearly identical to my elementary school. The sign, the large industrial feel, even the red brick. I walk closer and read the sign. I frown comes over my face as I scan up the side of the building, realizing everything is destroyed. I walk along the front of the building and notice the front doors. I decide the pile of rubble a few feet away looks more interesting. I run over, not knowing it's full of raiders, nor am I aware of my compass. I hear the raiders shouting battle cries and I pull out my trust 10mm. I crouch and turn the corner, aiming down my pistol, ready to fight to the death. I see small desks and I stop. I didn't expect that. I blamed the raiders for EVERYTHING. I go all out and clear the school, picking up weapons, ammo and neat looking armor as I go. I see a raider with a different name in a small hallway. Still filled with rage, I charge in, headstrong, blasting everything that moves. A few seconds later, I see my first death cut-scene.

I still get the creeps when I'm near that school.

I stayed along with the story line but everytime I got another mission, I treated that as if it were the main storyline.

Most of my time during the first playthrough I was devoting all of my points to Speech, because I really wanted to get successful speech checks.

Then I realized I had messed up my character, creating a new one only to be followed by about 30 more.

Well let's see, I didn't really pay attention to what my quest was, so I chose a direction and walked... straight toward Springvale Elementary. Thinking, "Ooo, an elementary school, this seems like it'll be ok" I open the front door expecting to be greeted by some friendly folk. And to my shock and horror, mangled bodies and a bloody mess everywhere. What had I gotten myself into, I died almost instantly after that trying to talk to the first raider I saw.
From then on, it was death to all raiders I came across.

Didn't read the manual. Exited the vault and was blown away by the vastness of the world, decided to wander around. Went around the 'back' of vault 101, killed a couple of those raiders on the overpass, thought "this is easy" and then wandered over to a barn over there and promptly got killed by a radscorpion. Sorted that out then ended up over at Jury Street Metro and had a vicious battle with Ryan Brigg for his machine gun. After that I remember getting to Paradise Falls and then going into the Deathclaw Sanctuary at level 4 - not recommended, but you do end up with a lot of good loot if you make it out alive. Went into Germantown Police Station and rescued Red and Shorty, but then had no idea how to find Big Town (as I said, didn't read the manual...) Wandered around for ages with them in tow and finally found what I thought was probably Big Town, which turned out to be Megaton.

Happy days!

When I went throguh my first playthrough I was thinking, 'Okay, the world ended and the survivors kill everybody they meet. I'm gonna have to fight through the entire thing to find my character's dad.' I then went to Megaton, shot Lucas Simms on sight and then realized that I was in a town, meaning there was some order. I was killed and then talked to him. I felt bad for shooting him so I decided to defuse the bomb, then I went out and headed north (I had gotten the quest Blood Ties). I stopped at Springvale Elementary thinking there'd be good loot and managed to kill most of the raiders before ruining out of stimpacks. I left and kept heading north getting to Big Town and then Arefu. I had been thinking Arefu would be well supplied and safe, I was wrong. I was hoping to find another decent settlement (like Megaton) so I wandered off, finding Paradice Falls. I managed to get some stimpacks and ammo before purchasing Clover and going back to Arefu where I killed everybody and Clover died. So I went scavenging for a while and then bought Jericho with the money and slaughtered Megaton. After that I wandered the D.C. ruins for a while. I remember it like it was yesterday.

From what I see here of the comments, most people had more fun when they DIDN`T see the GPS compass. I reckon that handhold is one hand hold too far. The map in the Pipboy is really enough imho.

Well, I did remove the compass with darnified Mod, but if you don`t have mod capability I guess removing the HUD might work although it would be very hard since you can`t check your health very easily.
