On my first playthrough I tend to go at it like Monopoly and buy everything. On later playthroughs it will depend on where the character most feels at home I suppose.

Any city closest to Morrowind ... Riften is a major one, but I will use mods to get a house near Morrowind border or in Winterhold.

I'll have to see where the houses are in the cities. I'll likely buy all of them eventually, but my main house will be whichever is closest to the fast travel point.

I hate having to run all the way through a city just to get to my house

I'm thinking Markarth at the moment. It depends on how nice the house itself is though. I settled in Cheydinhal on Oblivion because I thought it had the nicest house.

None, I'll be looking for a lone dwelling in a forest that borders a lake.

It was going to be Winterhold, near the college, but recent news has put me off that idea a bit.

Winter Hold, it was already mentioned in my legends. My character, Beogar, has ancestors Iwazami and his son Beorhelm which were both farmers near of the Winter Hold. They were part in a small rebellion and were arrested and shipped to the imperial prison on Cyrodiil. After three years they led Iwazami free, but shipped him on the Vvardenfell, where he died on corpus disease. Beorhelm get out of the prison four years later during the Oblivion Crisis. He closed several gates and became called as "Gate-closer". He got married with Jensine and they returned on Skyrim just before the Altmer hero, Curufin solved the Oblivion Crisis.
That's the way I know the story - someone else can have a different version about it.

I don't know yet and I may end up with more than one because of location. I try to find places near where I have to be. I think Winterhold and Windhelm are going to be strategic so it may be near there.

Can't say yet. It depends what kind of houses are available. As I generally prefer smaller ones. (Think Imperial Shack/Leyawiin House.)

I'm thinking Riften though, it seems a bit more inviting than the other ones.

Riften, so I have access to Thieves Guild accoutrements. Seems like a seedy underworld type city, right up my characters ally.

Dawnstar, which doesn't seem to be on the poll for some reason.
If not that then it'll be Solitude.

Probably all 5. If Skyrim is like the other TES games, I'll need to spend my eventual gobs of gold somewhere.

I typically buy all of them for convenience. But one is usually my 'main house'. In Oblivion that was Anvil and Bravil. As for Skyrim I guess it'll depend on what houses suit my character the most, along with what houses are unadvlterated awesome.

Depends on the character. My main is going to Whiterun, my mage to Windhelm and my stealth character to Riften.

There's not Winter Hold either. I think the five on poll were chosen because they are the biggest ones which will have walls and individual worlds in the game.
