Your Ideal Companion

I like magical companion ammo.

~~~
edit ~ Speaking of magical ammo, I like how Elizabeth, in Bioshock Infinite, will find ammo when your low. I also think it's neat how she finds coins for you and revives you when you die. Plus she is a very interesting person.
A sentry bot who wears a blonde women's wig, a fluffy pink apron, and has the personality of a stereotypical 1950s housewife. She speaks to the player character as if he/she was her pumpkin and treats enemies as naughty children that need to be diciplined. All of this in the usual robotic sentry bot voice.
Honestly, either a smart scientist character, or a mute (genetically) tribal-type. Either way, someone who can help out and you can become friends with easily.
I really liked Serena from Skyrim, however she was the only intresting NPC in Skyrim :P
Also Veronica from NV.
However i want more deept with companions, so it can lead some where. Romanticly.
I doubt companion ai will be any better so, for a companion, I would like a mad scientist that has uploaded her mind by mistake into a futuristic advanced sniper rifle and got stuck there. And as you wander around she will talk to you and people around you, commenting on what you do, some times help you and sometimes annoy you and other people around you.
It can be amusing to hear a Companion's vocalizations when we encounter a new area, or a new foe, etc.... and it can be handy to have them alert me to dangers (had Vanessa, a mod-companion, remark, "Am I glowing?" because we were being saturated with radiation).... all too often they're setting off mines or attacking foes that I did not see (pulling in a LOT more foes) and otherwise being more trouble than they're worth. I also like feeling like the hero, and when my Companion(s) mow down everything ~for~ me, I feel like, "Why am I even here?"
In Fallout New Vegas, at one point, I had Willow, Vanessa, The Handler (mod companions), a temporary companion (from a mod), EDE and Victoria --- SIX beings following me around! Granted, that's because of mods and such, but still, it really hit home why I don't like Companions too much.
One compromise that might be interesting.... have a 'ghost' Companion who basically only served to provide warnings / commentary and did not actually fight at all (or carry loot)... or perhaps a program that speaks into my cyborg brain to alert me to dangers and make wry comments about my decisions and tactics. Sort of a vocal HUD, I guess.
I would prefer to not have a companion. In video games, companions and support AI are notorious for being useless to the point where you watch them fight the enemy but in the end YOU have to pick up the slack since they are taking too long and end up doing their job anyway. And even if you had a companion that actually helped you, then you have to worry about the companion getting hurt and using valuable resources that are rare to find in order to patch them up.
I would rather run solo than have to worry about any of that.
Well, looking at prior FO companions and picking the ones I liked most, and then adding what I would have liked to make them better ... I'll start with
Rose of Sharon Cassidy (Cass). I really liked her background. I liked that she didn't just join you on a whim, you had to do stuff first. I liked that she had some personal weaknesses (whiskey). Loved her no-nonsense attitude. Giving her a nice shotgun made her a good close quarters support while I used ranged weapons. Just wish she was romancable as my PC really drew close to her, especially after completing her personal quest.
Ok but none of that "stepping into tears" crap.
My mind can only be screwed over so much...
Agreed. Cass is one of the most believable characters in the Fallout universe.
If you folks liked Cass, you really should have tried the mod Vanessa. A better companion in every way, with a distinct family resemblance.
My ideal companion would have different comments according to where I was at the time. He would have opinions of his own and not be afraid to voice them.
He would be good at sneaking.. (I like sneaking) and He would not set off traps that I have successfully avoided.
He would have strong personality and good sense of humor. He would not be afraid to leave if I was going to a path in life that he did not agree with and he would voice
exactly why he was leaving.
He would not complain if I needed him to carry things sometimes (I love Marcurio but I hate that about him) I hardly ever ask them to carry things..
He would voice dangers.. "I've heard this place is thick with Muties .. etc.."
He would not steal my kills! He would not zap them if they moved a half inch in my direction when I was successfully sneaking and about to snipe..
I don't really care what "Type" they are, as long as the functionality is in order. Both in FO and TES I hate that commands mean nothing to them and they are always in the way. If I tell them to not engage in battle, they'll be attacking the first bear they see even if it's barely in sight. If this hasn't been changed then I won't be using companions in FO4 either.
And wait until you are a mile away before running full speed towards you like a rocket and knocking you off the cliff you were standing on... :swear:
Oh yes I hate that too.
Ed-E was my ideal companion. Large perception range so nothing can sneak up on me, decent offensive capabilities and carrying capacity.
My SUPER ideal companion would be a Sentry bot that I can modify. Modifications would include:
1) Right Arm: laser mini gun Left arm: Seeker missiles
2) Some sort of laser defense to block incoming explosives
3) A type of seat on the back so the bot can be used as a vehicle
4) Instead of 3 wheels on 3 legs i would have 3 anti grav emitters to remove ground drag while moving.
Yeah. It sounds OP but no one gave me and parameters! Oh, and as a second companion, Dogmeat of crouse.
Depends on how the flow of battle ends up. I'm more inclined to build a sneaky sniper so if a typical battle only involves 1-3 combatants and can be ended quickly, I'll probably go with another sniper. If combat is typically more involved, then I'll probably go with a bullet sponge/meat shieldy type of companion.
For the sniper, someone like Boone but who talks a lot less...so basically Ser Ilyn Payne hahaha.
For the meat shield, Ex Enclave Mother Deathclaw because science.
They do need the ability to switch weapons as needed. I recall giving Cass this great shotgun that Red Lucy game me and she would start blasting that thing regardless of how far away the enemy was.
ED-E was pretty good. Wouldn't mind a version of him again.
But wait, there's always the Stealth Suit MK2! :D
Actually I would like an advanced version of the SSM2, maybe the power armor in F4 will be somewhat like that.
So... 200 years after the war. That's easily 4 generations or more depending on what the wasteland has done to human life expectancy. Given there isn't much by way of education, infrastructure, and resources I expect many survivor populations to have gone tribal / semi-primative. Probably enough time for language to start diversifying and mutating as well.
So I think it would be cool to befriend some wilderness clan / tribe and get a neo-primitive person as a follower. Absolutely savage melee, excellent sneak, familiar with area lore (however that might work in game), and voiced in a wacky accent with interesting colloquialisms.
