Your opinion on Combat in Skyrim?

Post » Thu Mar 20, 2014 8:05 am

Absolutely. That is, if you can stand a forced third person view-point. It has the best combat of any game I've played personally, and possibly the most difficult.

Also, there is semi-complex lore as well, although I haven't gotten too deep into it myself.

Haha. I'm talking about normal enemies that can stun. Not only "super-duper-uber enemies that die after using some strength potionz lolz". I'm talking about just how the player can stun any enemy, why can't a bandit use a power attack and make the character fall back? Nothing is keeping this from happening, honestly.

Agreed by a tenfold. Playing a set-up with a shield makes the player feel more into the combat. If combat was made more interactive, and no I don't mean QTEs. Then this problem could be solved. Also. On your "High level enemies being health sponges." I couldn't agree more. Something to fight this would be bosses having something unique about them. Be it the ability to teleport the Player back to another area or able to multiply themselves(if I recall, this was actually a fight sequence in a certain dungeon).

I disagree

A good system you can naturally use if you put the game in 10 months down the line. Right trigger = right hand, left trigger = left hand.....
Put a shield in left hand it blocks...

Left trigger = aim, right trigger = shoot...

The same is with racing games
Right trigger = forward, left trigger = break / backwards...

I'm not sure what you mean by natural, but if you mean 'convincing' in any degree then I'll have to contradict you. It's good in that it's not gratuitously unrealistic, like half of those giant sword mods out there, but it's a far cry from a recreation.

There's nothing worse than having a high level character using the same fighting moves as a low-level bandit. So yes, some fighting techniques the player can unlock after reaching certain levels would be fantastic. Perhaps as you go through the "Novice, Adept, Apprentice, etc." stages? More techniques are unlocked that the Player can choose to use?

Right trigger = obvious, left trigger = obvious....

I don't find myself struggling to remember the controls after two months of going away from it and coming back.

I'm sure some of you(if not most) have seen this mod but this mod is over a year old. Yet it fits into this conversation. Sooo

Have you ever faced a bandit chief equipped with a shield? They tend to bash you with it incessantly.

Sometimes you have to step back to have the chance to land a power attack.

Indeed. I'm just thinking about stuns where the enemy gets completely pushed back. While the Bandit Chief shield bash is a great start, it never really makes me go : "Crap! Get up! He's going to get you if you don't get up!" You know what I mean?

Controllers are inherently bad for first-person melee combat. There's no precision, so the whole experience just feels clunky and unnatural with not enough control over what your character does.

With a mouse, you attack with the left button and block with the right button, but on top of that you can do so much more simply by moving the mouse in a certain direction as you click, to determine the direction of an attack as well as the type (slash, stab, chop, etc).

Yeah, I was familiar with this feeling in Oblivion.

Which is why I feel like combat is a step down in Skyrim compared to Oblivion. Also another thing, does anyone else think its weird how the Player can drink those huge things of potions in less then a second while fighting an enemy?

That's a multiplatform game, so it's not completely impossible to pull off a good directional combat system when designing a game for controllers.

That's just way too over the top for me. I like that it gives you special attacks, but that's a bit... too special? :P

Haha I get what you mean. That would fit perfectly with weapons you have enchanted according to the attacks, though. A fire enchanted sword shooting fireballs?

What made me interested were the normal attacks. The first attack he does, the leaping attack would be nice, and later in the video when he does that knife thrust.

This video is more.. not "too" special for ya. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qQD1VO69Gs

Now that looks more like it. I'm loving all the blood.

Might try that. I'll have to see if it's compatible with SkyRe.

Edit: Checked the mod page. It is compatible, but I may have to tweak it a little bit. Will definitely try it.

Combat is rather simple and boring. That probably explains why sneaking is so popular. Nothing feels cooler than being an assassin.

As for what should be done, I wouldn't argue if Combat was similiar to say, Dark Souls. Now that game has some great combat.

Haha. I myself enjoy it greatly. Especially the ability to get stunned and enemies able to back-step.

The fact that this one word basically sums up Skyrim combat is.. nothing but sad.

The funny thing is that most of the issues I have with Skyrim's combat can be fixed with some tweaks in the CK.

It's still leaps and bounds better than MW's combat anyway.
