Your personal greatest game of all time

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 10:33 pm

Lets say you have to award a "gaming" Oscar to the only one game that you played so far. I understand that over the course of the next couple years this may change, but if you have to name a game right now, what would it be?

I am talking about the game that is number 1 best of the best ever released games in your own opinion.

My personal GOAT is Alan Wake, hands freaking down.

How about you?

EDIT: In current situation and mood. Not tomorrow, not week later, now.

Why are you asking that here? Maybe the thread would be better if you asked wether or not we liked fallout 4 before answering to your main question, at least to see what kind of games the ones who enjoyed fallout 4 a lot like.

It's a difficult decision for me. So many different games, I enjoy TES games above any other but each one of them have stuff that the others don't have it's difficult for me to pick only 1, until they release a game with the best parts of every TES.

I can't answer, I really enjoy Fallout 4 though, has got me happily playing and continuing to play well beyond any one week cutoff for most singleplayer titles where you can beat the story.

Ehmmm, I couldn't really say. My first videogame was chuckie egg on a ZX Spectrum I got as a birthday gift, and I have played games ever since. So, I have played a lot of great games, and not so great ones, that turned out great anyways. Because of the friends / people I played with (memories) But, specifically pick one single game out, that I can't :) A top 40 or so would be more appropriate :D

Moved to the correct forum.

I don't really believe in the concept of "best game ever" because that can change over the years or depending on mood.... but Morrowind, Zelda A Link to the Past, FFVI, and Dark Souls are definitely what I consider some of my all time favourites.

Yeah, even narrowing down to top 5 is way too hard. I love too many games to ever pick a small few that are "best." :P

This is too easy.. Morrowind.. I can't even begin to know how many hours I put into that game. I will never forget walking off the boat in Seyda Neen or the first trip to the isles. And who can forget bloodmoon! Such amazing memories... The world was alien and unlike anything I have ever seen.. It was fantastic but subtle and dark. Best game EVER! Not even a competition

Agreed, but for sake of topic...

I could stop there.

Though I enjoyed playing games in the arcades back in the day; early consoles; and my friends C64, when I played Morrowind on my roommates computer I was simply gobsmacked and fell in love immediately. It reawoke the gamer part of me I had lost during years of addiction. (Along with a lot of other things.)

It helped change my focus and I learned new things because of it, I grew. I owe Morrowind/Bethesda a lot!

MAN, that's a toughie. I'd probably have to break it down by genre...

Here's a short list (in no particular order):

-Fallout 4

-GTA V

-Forza Horizon 2

-Skyrim

-Minecraft

-Forza Motorsports 4, 5, and 6

-Dawn of War (an older title, but one of the best RTS ever made)

-others

Does FFVI have the ATB battle system?..I was a huge fan of FF up to the third...and recently downloaded IX onto PS3, was not aware of the ATB system..the games good, just trying to get used to the not-so-turn-based combat, wondering if VI is better..

I'm with Pluto. I can't narrow it down to one. But here's my top five:

1. Morrowind

2. Skyrim

3. Knights of the Old Republic 1

4. Dragon Age: Origins

5. Oblivion

Ask me on my death bed. :P

For now though... only a few come to mind, in no order-

System shock, Parasite eve 1, Metal gear solid 3: Snake eater, Fallout New Vegas, Vtmb, Fallout 2, Mass effect 2, Morrowind, Skyrim, Silent hill 1, 2, 3 and 4, Resident evil 1, Dragon quest VIII, Heavy Rain (More interactive movie than game, but eh), Pokemon red, blue, silver (Or soul sliver), Super Mario, Legend of Zelda (OoT, MM, Link between worlds, wind waker etc), Dragon Age origins, Jade Empire (Yes, I liked that game), Fatal Frame 3, KOTOR 1 & 2 (Haven't played the MMO one, yet).

I could go on, but I'm sleepy. :P

Can't answer the question. Too many games played, so I'll just give a smart-ass answer and say something really obscure (and not very good) and sees if it rings a bell for anyone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8c3O-7ruHc.

Which Final Fantasy III are we talking about? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeGwfHYBhRs? Or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOYvYNo_Nbw? Because if it's the latter, then you've already played Final Fantasy VI; it was localized in the west as FFIII.

Final Fantasy used the ATB system from Final Fantasy IV (originally released as II in the west) all the one up to IX. After that, they started changing things up.

I'm not sure...I had FFI&FFII on one game for gameboy advance, I think I remember playing at least FFII on possibly SNES when I was younger...and I have FFIII on Nintendo DS...all three are the same turn-based combat...on PSN they have FFIV-IX, and say they are PSone games...I got IX..

PSN is likely selling the PS1 ports of those old games, which referred to them by their original names. It should be noted that the ATB system looks a lot like a regular turn-based system on the surface. The main differences is that the game doesn't stop when someone's turn comes up; if you take too long deciding what to do, then the enemy can continue wailing on you as their turns come up.

What characters were in the FFIII that you played? Do any of the following sound familiar: Terra/Tina, Celes, Edgar, Locke, Kefka, Relm, Strago, Shadow, Sabin, Cyan, Setzter, Mog. If those ring any bells, it was VI. The characters in VI all had established personalities and a pre-fixed class of sorts that couldn't be altered, whereas in FFII, you formed a party of up to four people at the beginning, all of whom were blank slates and could have their classes changed on the fly.

Yea I know now how ATB works, I'm still getting used to it...and yea the screenshots do look a lot like the older games...

Those characters do not sound familiar...the FFIII that I have has a bunch of jobs that you can train your characters to be, like knight, ninja, monk, summoner, W/R/B Mage and onion knight ...it's definately the old turn-based battle style...

The FFI and II game was dawn of souls I think, and I forget the other..but they were both on the same game on GB advance..

I'll probably check out IV, V, VI..etc...after I'm done with IX..

It alternates on days you ask me like many others, but the three that will come out of my mouth the most: Secret of Mana, Daggerfall, Heroes of Might and Magic III

I have reasons for all 3. Secret of Mana because I had so much fun playing that game co-op with my best friend controlling either the sprite or the girl(whom we aptly named "Sprite" & "Girl", and he always had hilariously snarky comments. Even better was the fact that no matter how many times we played through the game(and man did we ever. Dozens of times, easily, if not breaking triple digits) he always had something different to say. Much fun was had with that :)

Daggerfall because it was just so much fun to explore everything. Arena was good, but I guess either I was just a bit to young to understand it all or I just wasn't at the stage to really appreciate it, for me Daggerfall is the game that truly introduced me to open world gameplay. I can remember spending hours every day plotting out every single nuance of dozens of characters. And then I also remember my best friend just firing up a standard fighter type and going to this little island and constantly slaughtering everyone :)

HoMM 3 because I actually made quite a few friends introducing them to the game and them becoming super addicted to it, and then over the course of hours and hours of gaming finding out that we had quite a bit in common. One such friend is one of my closest friends to this day, and we still fire up Heroes(depending on the mood it could be 2-5) fairly frequently. Well, as frequently as you can when you are advlts and have other responsibilities I guess ^^

There are many games that are my favourites and I can′t name just one, but I′ll keep it short :)

Deus Ex (PC)

Shadowgate (NES)

Oblivion (PC)

Heroes of Might & Magic 2: the Succession Wars

sure 3 had far better gameplay, but I liked 2's story better than 3's.. plus, first appearance of both Roland and Archibald Ironfist, who became very interesting characters as the franchise progressed

EDIT: I do sometimes wonder though, how different the series would have become of Archibald's victory had been canon rather than Rolands..

EDIT #2: certainly wouldn't be my favorite game (I have played far to many to pick just one favorite).. but certainly the most nostalgic :)

For me, it's Final Fantasy 7. Been playing video games for 40 years and I still haven't played one that moved me as much as that game.

Trying to narrow it down to one is hard, as a teenager the games that left a lasting impression on me were Ultima IV and Populous. Then after close to 10 years of not really playing games Oblivion introduced me to Bethesda and modern games.
