My assassin wears a Penitus Oculatus armor with boot/glove and hood from the dark brotherhood set, i find it quite nice (and way better than the hideous orange and black suit of the DB). My other character (a woman redguard) wears fur/hide armor and sometimes a scaled one, look so natural on her.

Always a hood or a circlets for my characters, helmets are just so ugly in Skyrim.

On my Nord warrior, I find that a full ebony armour set with the helm swapped out for the Masque of Clavicus Vile is stunning.

Steel Plate on my Nord. That looks like the most "canon" armor for a Nordic Hero ever.

Nightingale on my Khajiit. It's almost like being a dark avenger of some kind while thieving/killing/becoming an anti-hero >.>

Ebony on my Redguard. It's got similarities with the Steel Plate in that its awesome looking, functional, but it lacks the heavy Nordic designs, and could easily be a Redguard Weaponsmaster's.

I was surprised at how falmer armor looks okay on women. I'm still looking for boots and gloves, though.

For me, the elven set is the best looking followed by glass.

Orcish for standard armours, General Tullius' armor overall though.

Full dwarwen armor without the helmet, don't know kinda reminds me of a picture from warhammer 40k that had that kind of style to it, of course Warhammer 40k armor is much more bulky.

Clothes:

1. Mourners
2. Vaermina
3. Black Mage

Light Armor:

1. Dragonscale (without helmet)
2. Guard armor

Heavy Armor:

1. Ebony

Generally I'm very disappointed, Guild Wars had much, much better armors, especially considering you could dye them. In Guild Wars you're striving to get that cool armor you want. In Skyrim I was using elimination: which one is less bad.
Part of the problem is Skyrim being Nord-centric. Glass armor for example is good, but too bulky for Argonian. If it was slim, I'd include it. I did include Ebony though even though it doesn't really fit most Argonians either, but armor looks good in itself.

Right now I am wearing dragonscale, but my favorite in Skyrim is the Glass Armor. Atleast it isn't that horrible neon day glo green they made in Oblivion. Looks better, but I still wish it was more like the Morrowind glass.

For me, it definitely depends on the race. At the moment I really like the look of Elven and Glass on my High-Elf paladin, suits their slim body type very well. :)

Ancient Nord obviously looks the best, with iron a close second, and steel a third. None of those appear to have been inspired by checking out the work of armorsmiths from Azeroth or other places where the goal is to be as flamboyant as possible.

For my mage character, I like the look of the Archmage robes the best. With the Archmage robes, I use Thalmor gloves and boots which look good with it and obviously throw in a mage circlet of some fashion. Makes for a nice touch. I kind of wish I could use those magical facemasks with the archmage robes but there is conflicting glitch that causes my character to walk around with an invisible head with the mage hood covering it like normal.

For Lydia, I have her sporting the Blades Armor set as I like the look of it on her. She doesn't make use of the shield since I have her sport an ebony greatsword as her weapon of choice.

Personally I think the nightingale armor is too over the top with its looks. Like, I understand if you aren't walking around town with it on, but it looks too odd to wear all the time.

I prefer the leather armor without the helmet. Especially on an argonian.

I also like the stormcloack officer's armor w/ the helmet.

I think all the heavy armors look really good. Can't really pick a favorite, I love the new orcish.

Armor of the Old Gods set.

Studded Imperial Armor.

Steel Plate Armor.

Daedric Armor.

Pentius Oculatos armor.

Whatever it is General Tullius is wearing. I don't think you can get it without console commands.

The mage's DB hood looks pretty cool if worn with anything but the rest of the robes.

I also really don't like the Nightingale armor that much, it just looks too super-heroish.

Glass looks great on females. So does Daedric, course Daedric looks great on males too. Ebony also looks great on males. I just don't use either one b/c they're too over the top for me, at least for Skyrim's feeling. I think I could've used the Daedric in Morrowind, and the Ebony for Oblivion though. Elven also looks great. I was very impressed with it in Oblivion, and even more so now in Skyrim.

I dunno, so far I really like just the standard thieves guild armor. It looks realistic, practical, comfortable. Overall though, I don't think I could pick one as the absolute best. All depends on what character I'd be playing.
