I personally love the look of Steel Plate armor set.
Especially the helmet, with the wings and all that.

What is your favorite?

Easily Nightingale for me. On women ebony mail ain't bad. And I didn't mind normal leather, which I used all the way to Nightingale on my thief.

Nightingale easily, I was astounded at how much I loved it when I put it on for the first time. Killing has never looked so good.

I was really impressed with ebony armor for my lawful good characters and nightingale for my unlawful bad characters.

The Ebony Mail looks fantastic on Lydia. For myself, I've taken a liking to Dragon Scale. Have not yet encountered this "Nightingale"

Male: Iron Armor set. I wish I could use these all the way through, without modding anything :(
Fem: Steel set ( with the non-horn helmet)

If it helps, it has to do with the
Spoiler
Thieves Guild
and is a huge help for stealthy characters who like one-handed weapons.

I really like the look of General Tulius's armor. Perfect red and gold decor, all aristocratic like.

The Imperial Heavy Armor with the Closed Imperial Officer's Helmet. I made that [censored] as good as daedric just so I could use it late game.

For me:

1. Nightingale
2. Thieves guild, all three variants
3. Blades armor
4. Steel plate
5. Stormcloak officer armor

Love the robes this time too. They don't look too monkish but more like normal outfits.

Ebony with Nightingale hood. The dark battle mage!

I've been looking out for a stand alone black hood though that would suit it better. Are there any in Skyrim that are not attached to robes?

The Dark Brotherhood mage hood is probably your best bet, I posted it in my picture. It does have a bit of red though.

Edit: If not, the Shrouded Cowl is completely black, but doesn't cover the face as much as a hood.
