I tend to base my characters' names on the language the real life culture they're based off of had.

My Nord will be Vafud, the anglicized version of the Norse word for 'wanderer.'

An Imperial will probably be based on a Roman name. Maybe Caius Claudius, or Marcus Lepidus.

And likewise, a Breton would probably be based off of a French name, and an Altmer an English. The other races would depend on the lore.

I think that anyone who doesn't know who Thor is, must be living under a Saharan rock. He's probably one of the best known God of any mythology - maybe even the second most known God of all, after Zeus (not counting Yahweh/Allah ofc, which is by far the best known God). Thor even has his own Marvel Comic character (with his own movie due for the cinemas soon - see link below), and he's even represented in WoW (as Thorim).

My first guy will be called Aeneas because after I read The Iliad I fell in love with the guy who survived the Trojan War, went on a helluva journey to land in Italy and found the village that would turn into Rome. He'll be a Redguard or Orc depending on their updated, or lack-thereof, looks and be fluent in Axes and Heavy Armour.

A handy resource if you want an explicitly lore friendly name for your character. I usually look at the names, and come up with one that sounds like a Dunmer name, for example, without already being one. I'm kind of a stickler for accuracy, so no Bob the Warrior.

Also, I wish I wasn't so dang adamant about making the characters I use canon in my mind. I feel weird if I play my Daggerfall character in Oblivion, for example. So I guess no one's making a reappearance in Skyrim. Anyone else do this?

I always name my Dunmer Nalfein. The name is from Forgotten Realms, but my character isn't actually based off of his namesake, I just like the name.

Vafud is one of the names of Odin, right?
My nord will probably have a similar name, and my Khajiit will probably be "Eremos". Then I'll have a Breton named "Will" or "William". Boring, but I like it.
That covers the three main archetypes, and all my characters after that will be more or less random.

Meh, I've never based names off of a character's play style and I've always thought it was silly to do so. Maybe it's just the RPer in me, but the way I figure it, no parent knows how their kid will turn out when they name them. So no parent is going to give a name based on a character type. So for the OP's list, I'd end up with something like...

Strength based - Alice
Stealth based - Alisa
Magic based - Gwyneth
All rounder - Inadriel
Marksman - Ceit
Other - Meilin

And I realize many of those probably don't fit with Nords or Mer or whatever, but that's beside the point.

I haven't seen this posted already, but I just skimmed the topic. Anyway http://www.tamriel-rebuilt.org/index.php?p=modding_data/ngen is a really good TES name generator that is lore-friendly for each race and gender. I usually use that then modify a few things here and there to come up with my character names. There are other things to take into consideration though, like how Nords usually have titles after their names, such as Ongar the World-Weary.

My Skyrim character will be a female Nord named Vannora Shale-Fist.

Altruis

I came up with this because I really liked both Alteration (especially the idea of changing the world around you) and the Altmer. From there I took a dictionary and looked up similar looking words. I found Altruistic and though the definition of the word really suited my good guy play style. Finally, I shortened the word so it looks more name-like. The result was a name with a personalized meaning. For a last name, I'm thinking of taking my last name and altering it slightly so that the meaning suits the first name.

I think the most important part of coming up with a name is making it feel personal. That's just my opinion on the matter.
