Your Skyrim Experiences, so far....

Post » Mon Feb 17, 2014 6:33 pm

So, how'd you get into Skyrim ? Or, how did your Skyrim experience evolve?

Myself, I started playing Skyrim on PS3, got used copy cheap at Gamestop. Was looking for a game to replace Diablo3, was so sick and tired of the repetition, and the leveling for no purpose got old after a few months. I had Oblivion for PC (no expansions), since about the time the game came out, but never 'got around' to trying it out lol. After playing Skyrim for a couple weeks on PS3, I noticed a copy of GoTY version of Oblivion at Gamestop for like $9, picked it up, for if I ever tire of Skyrim, I love having a game similar to one I've played a long time, but with different content, but eventually, I WILL get around to playing it, though now I'll probably pick up the GoTY version for PC lol.

Anyways, after about 2 months of playing Skyrim on PS3, I decided to move up to the PC version, since the long load times were seriously cutting into my playtime. simply cause on PS3 the loads are very long, and I like to save a lot also, saving takes about the same time as loading a new area , on PS3. Plus I was very anxious to see how good it looked on PC, though I didn't think I'd get into modding.

A day or so after installing Skyrim on my PC, I was kinda bored (not with Skyrim) , just bored overall, moreless unmotivated. Spent the day reading up on how to mod Skyrim, and watched most of Gopher's videos. After installing my first mod , which was a graphical mod, I was definitely hooked on modding. I spend majority of first 2 weeks learning about BOSS, TES5edit, Wrye Bash patches, and of course reading up on mods, types of mods, and deciding what all I'd like to adjust in my game and fine tuning things so I got good performance. Ended up installing a new graphics card, since my PC used an integrated graphics chip. First time I ever installed a graphics card in a PC, was SOO easy (also had to upgrade my power supply for the graphics card, was also very easy to install).

So basically, I was here on the forums a lot during that 2 week period of discovering modding. As some may have noticed, lately I've been posting a lot less, probably because , finally, I've gotten really into actually playing Skyrim lol. I absolutely love everything about this game and the things modding adds such as : Vilja & Inigo, much better graphics & details, improved monsters and increased respawns (thanks Immersive Creatures ! ), new areas (Falskaar, moonpath to Elsweyr, and Wormstooth), and more armors & weapons (thanks immersive weapons and immersive armors ! ).

I just see that it will ever be tough to move on from Skyrim anytime soon, and finally get around to playing Oblivion lol ! Graphically, Skyrim is going to be a tough game to beat (though, I won't be expecting that from Oblivion, though the graphics are good, just not as realistic as Skyrim).

So.. that's my overall Skyrim experience, so far.....

I've gotten my Khajiit thief, Adam, to level 36 and thru the thieve's guild quest and Dark Brotherhood Quest, just started Dawnguard quests, he's already level 36, and by no means a jack-of-all-trades, this time around, pretty much keeping to the thief / assassin rp.

Please share your Skyrim experience with us !

It is a long story, but M'aiq will shorten it up.

M'aiq's father was also called M'aiq. As was M'aiq's father's father. At least, that's what his father said. M'aiq doesn't really remember his childhood, perhaps he didn't have one? M'aiq traveled to Skyrim and shares adventurers words of wisdom that his father told him long ago.

Adored Oblivion, bought at when it came out, so naturally I was very excited for Skyrim. My first character was a Khajiit jack-of-all trades character. I found that I had great trouble with the broadness of the build so I made an Argonian assassin for my second character. After 100 hours with him, I retired him.

Right now I'm playing a Nord and a Bosmer. I still have SO much to discover, and I can't wait.

Rented Skyrim on Dec 26, 2011. Rented it repeatedly until I finally bought in March 2012. Keep in mind that I played the game (PS3 version) vanilla until Feb 2013. That gave it some much needed life. Stopped playing it on June 2013 foe The Last of Us, played again until Aug 2013 for Saints Row IV, played a little until GTA V came out. Played it about twice since then, and only for about 2 hours total. I have not played it since and am actually thinking about selling my PS3 copy.

Still saving up for a good gaming PC and I already have the Anthology.

I always felt Skyrim was a poor buy.

I was a fan lured by the pretty trailer and the thing they promised. And I got a lack luster Action Adventure game that includes RPG style leveling up. After playing Two Worlds 2, which imo is a better Skyrim game than Skyrim, and Dragon's Dogma I cannot seem to make myself go back to Skyrim.

I make characters with the customization feature, otherwise, I don't play it. All I use it for now is to design and model characters.

I have to agree. Although I did expect an Action Adventure RPG in fairness, and I got exactly that. An action game with a beautifully breathtaking world, full with magnificent lore. I can see how a fan of genuine RPG's would find it hard to get into Skyrim though.

I've never played Two Worlds, I wonder if it's any good? Never heard of Dragon's Dogma.

Two Worlds 2 is good. I personally like the crafting system better. Despite it looking "cartoony" more so than Skyrim.

Two Worlds 2, you can take any article of armor, or clothing you're wearing and break it down into its core pieces. Same with your weapons and swords. Then you put those objects back together to make something else or to better improve something else, makes a world of sense.

Despite the magic seeming less complex, TW 2 also has spellmaking, and you can turn a meh magic system into god mode cause you can create just about anything in your imagination. The main storyline is ridiculously cliche, but I liked it either way. The voice acting was nice, the beastiary was large, and I had a lot of fun. I didn't even do all the side quest, cause I got my ass handed to me by some of them and gave up at some point. lol

Oh and in TW 2 you have three ways of lockpicking, magic, lockpick, or break the lock. Any of the classes can really do it, but yeah.

Dragon's Dogma is also really really really damn good. It's character customization is how I feel Skyrim should have done. Think Dragon's Dogma is like a better Dragon Age Origins. And it is damn good.

Tbh, when I first brought skyrim....I didn't like it.

I was so...idk, tired of pretending in a pretend world of pretend options. Coming off of FNV (A real RPG imo) I had some expectations but...man did those get shot to Oblivion :P

Still, I just played the game for the exploring part (I can't RP in skyrim cause my imagination isn't that great) and I got lots of hours into it.

I had tons of fun with it (The exploring part) but the writing...ha ha ha.

Skyrim is like an Action adventure game or as someone once said it's a (PPG) Pretend playing game :P

All in all, I still like the game but not because it's a good RPG, I just have-er had fun exploring.

Sounds really interesting. I like the sound of Dragon's Dogma. I thoroughly enjoyed DA: Origins. Hated DA2, so I can't play as DA3 as I won't have a save to import.

I played the demo for Two Worlds 1 and hated it, I'm presuming Two Worlds 2 is better.

But for me, as far as world design goes.. I don't think any game will ever top TES. But that's my opinion. I've spent more time in Tamriel than I have in England.

^You just remind me of the way I feel about Skyrim

The Environment IS nice. The Atmosphere IS great. The World is Well Developed.

But v

Everything is terrible and [censored] and makes me bored. Because I really after a while get tired of playing pretend. I want well written quest. I want a well written story. I'm so sick and tired of defending games that have [censored] ass writing.

If we as consumers want our game industry to change, if we as consumers want the market to change we need to stop buying into this stuff. We need to start supporting video games that aren't written out like B Horror flicks.

I'm so sick and tired of lackluster fantasy worlds. I'm so tired of safety. I am not even going to buy Thief after reconsideration because I don't want another [censored] disappointing handholdy game.

@Hagrid TW 1 was terrible, but they fixed everything wrong with that game. The people who made Two Worlds 2 put time and effort into fixing everything wrong with their game and so I admired them greatly for it. And wish game companies would learn from them.

A sequel to any game, or in this case a fifthtuplet to a series should be BETTER than it's predecessor and it got worse.

Bethseda's modeling svcks for people

Bethseda's writing svcks

Bethseda's level system svcks

And just because something originally was broken doesn't mean it cannot be fixed. It doesn't mean gut out everything enitrely. It means take what you have and [censored] work on it to [censored] fix the [censored] game. Jesus [censored], it's not rocket science.

"Oh the leveling system in Oblivion was bad, let's remove the class system"

No! The class system was fine. Dragon's Dogma has a class system that I reall like and could see expanding on it.

In Dragon's Dogma you gain three basic classes, warrior, ranger, and wizard. At first this seems really boring. But as you level through the game you gain prestige classes. Like sorcerer, and all kinds of awesomness.

I'm not saying limit people to these classes only.

But uses Skyrim's leveling system with a complex, complicated class system and you'd have something really damn fine and dandy. but no instead they took it out and gutted their own [censored] system.

It makes me mad. It irritates me.

Maybe it irritates you because of how amazing the world and lore is, but how awful the writing is. Coupled with the fact that we roleplayers have to make our own fun in a game like Skyrim. These are things that are I hope are improved in TES: VI.

You hit the nail on the head though. I know Bethseda is capable of better. I actually did not super mind the Fallout 3 story. It was extremely touching and I truly did care for the father figure in that game. Oblivion is great and Shivering Isle is still one of my favorites. Morrowind was amazing as well.

I know Bethseda is capable of more. I know they have more in them. So why are they settling for less? Where is the company that I appreciate and enjoy? Where is the passion and drive in a world so rich and lotioned with lore and great ideas? Where did it all go? Why?

Bethseda please please please, take passion and pride in your work. Please for the love of god, please listen to those who speak. We aren't asking to outdate your game. We're asking you to show us what you really have inside. Where is that fire, where is that passion for your own work.

Oh, I never tried TW2, with that mini-review you did, I went and ordered it.

I love Dragon's Dogma to bits, I got Dark Arisen when it was free in PS+ and I love it even more!

As for experience; I pre-ordered the game, mind you I never pre-order. Came home and was hooked, everything was so freaking awesome. But after the good first impression, everything started feeling blah, just blah. I'll get occasional cravings to play the game, but that first impression I had is long gone. I still enjoy it, and love RPing in it.

Mods are helping a lot in Skyrim!

It's the opposite of Oblivion, I had a terrible first impression of it, got bored when I first played it, but when I came back to play it I loved it to bits. I have several thousand hours in Vanilla OB alone!

First time TES game. Have PC Legendary Edition. Got into it only because was bored with FONV & FO3 (both modded) tried some FC3 (love DX11 graphics!) but the cut scenes were too long and broke the immersion imo..

Was reluctant to get into any medieval era inspired gaming whatsover, but after being engaged with Skyrim since mid 13', I have'nt looked back.

Don't know why players complain about it being a boring game, I'm saying this after spending up to 7 hours a day, nearly every day since mid 2013! have no idea exactly how many "playing" hours that is in real life, I play offline so don't measure via steam. Even if I did, does that system still measure playing time even when the game is paused?

I think players that whinge about the game being boring show a lack of creativity in attitude. You have to train yourself to think and look at the Skyrim gaming world "outside of the box" you know, as in lateral thinking.. approach quests in different ways, use different characters (your version of "roleplaying")

There is no right or wrong way to achieve anything in this game. Thats the beauty of it.

I saw the trailers for Skyrim, I was playing Oblivion at the time, plus the guy at Gamestop asked me if I had plan's on getting it. Pre-ordered... along with what ever FPS came out at the same time, for my husband. Been playing ever since. ( the only game he's had for more than a month is RDR).

Never played TW 2, my husband ( for what ever reason) ordered Dragon's Dogma for himself ( He's a FPS kinda guy, even with swords)...he hated it ( well duh! ) I played his character for a day or so...and came right back to Skyrim. Still have the disc...will get around to playing in that world eventually.

Never played a TES game before Skyrim. I was a Black Isle, IWD, BG, NWN, DA:O player mostly. Needless to say, Skyrim kicks their collective asses. The sheer size and beauty of the game still impresses (I've only been playing a few months) and the freedom in which you can develop your character is something ALL games should follow. I will admit that the writing borders on ponderous, and inability to ruin the Black-Briars and Silver-hands is frustrating, but I run home after work every night for a two hour fix. Buying Oblivion soon as a lot of you Bethesda vets sing its praises.

90% of quests are all linear fetch quests. I can pretend they're not, but that doesn't make it any different. Using imagination to "roleplay" doesn't make it different, because all the roleplaying is done in my head rather than in the game world. It's LARPing, not actual roleplaying.

I got the game around the time I first started playing Dark Souls religiously. It was a bad idea because I gave it a shot while all the while kept comparing it to Dark Souls and felt it was inferior and taking time away from the game I actually wanted to play. Fast forward two years where I had the sudden urge to give it another shot, and I'm really glad I did.

The first character I made was a Battlemage but I couldn't really get into it. My strength was torn between my one hand strength and my destruction power, and I've quickly learned that in this game, being a jack of all trades just won't cut it. You need to be specifically good at one form of combat to really thrive. So I made an Assassin thief and am having a much better go around this time. It's also more interesting that I tend to stay away from thief like characters but with this game it is a lot more thought out and methodical, especially when included with Illusion spells. So yeah, currently going through the Dark Brotherhood and Thief's Guild quests which are a lot of fun. Kind of worried the game will drop off after finishing the DB quests...I love assassinating targets in any game!

But this is okay!

God they are both RPGs and both in the RPG genre. I am a firm believer of ideas forging ideas.

If you see something good in another game, and the idea goes off well find a way to incorporate it into your game. Games are not linear and standarized to their ONE singular game. Skyrim can only be compared to Skyrim, wtf kind of mentality is that.

There is a rule as a writer and a reader, "if you notice the writing then the book is no good". There is a phrase saying that you have to get lost to the point where you do not notice the writing.

Same concept with a game.

Skyrim can be compared to any fantasy genre RPG. It's a silly and stupid mentality to believe that, the two games are so different you cannot compare them.

To me, imo, Dark Souls and Demon Souls create a far more convincing dark fantasy atmosphere than Skyrim. Skyrim tried to hard and fell fat on its face.

Skyrim's story can be compared to other games.

Because that's how we make better games. We learn from others past and history. What people like and what people want. I'm so sick and tired of, "you can't compare these games"

For example, Metro Last Light is not a RPG, but it has an idea that RPGs should take. The immersion in that game was AMAZING. I got my quest on a clipboard, instead of some UI. I read stuff and used a lighter as a flashlight. My flashlight had battery life.

Obviously not the lighter and flashlight, but

-TES 6, getting my quest on a HELD character journal

-TES 6, using a lantern

Games can be compared, or their elements can. To learn from one another.

Got hyped for Skyrim when it was rumored/leaked in November 2010 and finally revealed at the VGA's a few weeks later. Signed up here and checked the forum religiously. Went to the midnight release on 11/11/11 to get the 360 version. I enjoyed it for 50 hours and then that's when I started to notice all of Skyrim's problems and felt disappointed (also influenced by me over-hyping the game/Feeling it didn't live up to what I thought of Oblivion) I went back and played Oblivion for awhile until early 2012.

I decided to roleplay a character and ignore all of the things that I didn't like, the game became immensely more enjoyable. I bought the PC version on steam during the Christmas sale later that year and have been playing it since then.

I saved enough Money to buy a PC at Wal-Mart. I purchased Arcanum, Majesty, Starcraft, and Morrowind. I discovered Morrowind had these User Made things called Mods. I had to move to keep employment when My Arcanum Play CD died, and I went to a Best Buy and purchased the Bethesda Game called Oblivion. I became burnt out on Morrowind and Oblivion, and I did not have cheap, reliable Internet access until 2009. I began Modding Oblivion, and played a heavily Modded Oblivion until 11-11-11.

I have played a lot of Skyrim, but I do take breaks from the Game to replay older Games. :tes: :fallout:
