Your Skyrim Upgrade Plans

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:50 am

I'll be playing on my notebook, I figure an i7, 6GB of ram and a 5850 shouldn't be too bad for Skyrim. Though I doubt I'll be able to max the settings. I'm kind of glad I took the 1600x900 screen though, the lower resolution allows me to play games at higher overall settings with good FPS.

Im planning on making a new pc. I want to know if an i7 is good for gaming or is the dual cores better for cpu?

Never built a pc b4 but i figure i will start with the cpu then motherboard then ram, then gfx.

my plan is:

i7 CPU
6-8 GB RAM
1 GB GRAPHICS

If the game threads as efficiently as possible, that i7 would probably run the entire population of skyrim in the same room - if it doesn't multithread at all, the i7 is an incredibly fast processor that will still run flawlessly.
Don't forget to buy a case, too!

A quick look shows it referencing the i7, so it's not too out of date in any case. Even if it were, just ignore the specifics (you should do that anyway) and take the advice, none of it will have changed. For selecting your specific components I'd look at current benchmarks and try and figure something out in your price range - you may be able to buy a card that'll run crysis on max at 2560x1600 in 3d, but if you aren't planning to do more than run it at 1920x1200, you can buy something significantly cheaper. It all depends on what you're going to ask of your hardware.

I only plan on upgrading my graphics card to a dx11 capability one, my rig as it is can probably blow it out of the water.

Doing a self-build from new parts; only thing that's likely to continue over is the DVD writer, but they're inexpensive and I might want blu-ray by November anyway...

No idea of the spec yet, since the hardware will have moved on again by the end of the year. But probably a high clocked Sandy Bridge CPU and whatever monster nVidia follow up the 580/570 with, if anything. XP Pro x64 or Windows 7 (depending on DX11 and compatibility), maybe even solid state OS/program drives if I can save enough and cost-per-gig is more reasonable by then.

Well I'm hoping to get a new job this year which will give me the funds to finally buy a PC (at the mo I still have my pre-grad job, which is fairly rubbish). If I do, I'll probably wait untill the specs are released and bother you lot about what I should buy - I've never bought a PC before (always just hand-me-downs) so I have no idea what to look out for or if I'm being ripped off.

I know this can handle skyrim (perhaps) but for crysis 2 at max settings and a res of at least 2560 x 1600, is this overkill.

I haven't kept up with PC specs in a few years now.. but 48GB of RAM - do you plan on running C.A.D. software on the side as well? and aren't Xeon processor more for servers than desktops? How much is this monstrosity costing you?

Well, a 1TB SSD alone would cost him around $3-4000, and the rest? Well, that's running at the theoretical limit of that motherboard, and that's an incredibly powerful motherboard. The Xeon may be a server processor - but that just means it's rigged for better multiprocessor support, it'll still work (work incredibly well, even) in a desktop configuration. That's the sort of machine you build if you've won the lottery and have money to burn on a machine to last 20 years. It'd be overkill for everything - but by the same virtue it'd never struggle with anything. Too much power is better than not enough.

Since I only have a laptop for modest gaming now, I plan on spending most of my half bonus after AIT on flying my fiance here to the US, a 40-42" LED TV, and about $1500 on building my own PC.

I just said I wont get an upgrade but sandy bridge is out and bulldozer will be soon and my dad is willing to give me 300$ towards a new PC... So I will probably upgrade before its release.

No upgrades as I will be playing it on the 360. Although, the idea replacing my PC keeps creeping up... :whistling:

Been around 3 years since I changed my PC, so it's about time to get a new one. Every 2-3 year full change is my normal policy, I would have done that even without Skyrim on horizon, but since I do plan to at last give it a go it would be good to know the recommended system requirements.
