Your Skyrim Upgrade Plans

My PC is fairly new, just the GPU is rather old (HD 4830) so I'm going to replace that before Skyrim comes out.

In the same way that you can make Morrowind look better than Oblivion|Vanilla, it wouldn't surprise me if you could make Oblivion look better than Skyrim|Vanilla.

And make Skyrim look better than Crysis 2, but then nobody would be able to run it.

Most people are worried that Crysis 2 will run too well, rather than Crysis 1's not running well enough, so who knows :P

(I just realized I payed so many hundreds of euros for better performance, and I overlooked the basics)

Hah, no kidding.

Thats like buying a top-end home theatre setup and only having milk crates for furniture - plenty of performance maybe, but that is no way to enjoy it.

I have a feeling - just a hunch - that Skyrim will run well on mid-range computers (because it has to run on current gen consoles), but it will have a high ceiling if you have the system to take it there - also, there will eventually be mods with bigger system hits.

well, im afraid i dont have half a million to upgrade my computer like all you rich little boys and girls, so im gonna have to stick to my ps3.

wish i could hit the damn lottery once or twice so i could afford to upgrade, though...

It's not so dramatic.
Most people have computers at their homes for work.
If you bought a desktop computer at a around 700 euros the last 2 years you should have a capable dual core cpu for most of the games out there.
The only think you need to convert that computer from a web dedicated computer to a computer who runs games of the current console generation is to pay another 100 or 150 euros for a graphics card.Half the price for a new console.
Oh,and since games are cheaper at PCs, with the usual price for a new pc game being 40 to 50 euros while the usual price for console games are 60 to 75 euros,I thought that cosole gamers are rich.

All these people who spend more than a thousand at pc hardware (like me) are technology freaks that just want the best and latest tech that is available to the masses.
That doesn't mean that you have to have the latest tech for playing video games.

I plan on spending around £1400 on a custom built PC, which will hopefully be able to run Skyrim on high, if not maximum, settings. I believe that £1400 would be around $2100 US dollars currently, according to the current exchange rates. :3

I spent about £800 (not including monitor, keyboard & mouse) on a rig that runs New Vegas like a dream. £1400 is in the realm of throwing money away for no tangible improvements, I think.

More than 4 GB of RAM just seems like overkill

This is a thread for the fans of Skyrim that are pc gamers to discuss about hardware matters related to the game.
WHY console gamers have to SPOIL this thread starting a console vs pc war ?

It's your right to believe that xbox is better than pc,the same way zerojinkui thinks ps3 is better than pc.
But we don't need your opinion about that,at least in this thread, because the topic of this thread is different.

I may be getting a bit ahead of myself with this post, but I think with my current specs,

AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 4.0ghz
NVIDIA GTX 580
12 GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 64-bit

I'll be able to run it on max just fine. Hell, I even plan on upgrading my CPU to AMDs new Bulldozer architecture when it releases (ah, the joys of an 8 or 12 core processor with a technique that rivals and demolishes Intel's hyperthreading with stock speeds being as high as 3.6ghz), so this game will be MUCH LESS of a problem if I go that route. Also will be much less of a problem if I decide to get a 2nd GTX 580 and SLI the hell out of the game.

Then again, the engine could either require a computer from 5 years in the future to be able to run it at max, or it could also be as horribly optimized for PCs as the Gamebryo engine is, so my hopes aren't too ridiculously high.

I spent £350 (not including monitors, keyboard, or mouse) on a rig that will run NV like a dream - though I fear you can do it at significantly higher resolutions :P

I'd probably be getting a new computer around mid-year. It's high time I replaced this six-year old "vintage".

Depends where you live too. I spent 1700EUR on my rig and I carefully chose the best value for money components (got help from this forum). Hardware is too damn expensive here.

Skyrim will run on the X-box 360, just like Oblivion so my current PC which can run Oblivion on max settings with Quarl's texture pack installed should be fine.

If I'm able to buy a new processor for my laptop then I will probably buy the game for PC, because my Processor completely svcks.

But I probably won't play it for PC anyway

I had a friend of the family who owns his own business in custom gaming PCs built one for me (with a massive discount :P ) a few months ago.
I can play games like New Vegas, Assassin's Creed II and Mass Effect with everything cranked to max easily so I'm pretty confident that it will run Skyrim too. However, I want to experience Skyrim at its full glory so when the system requirements come out and my PC doesn't meet the max requirements to play it with everything maxed out, I will update.

Building a new one from scratch this March, planning on getting the best graphics card on the market and maxing everything out.

AMD is planning on releasing a new line of GPU's, Radeon HD 7000 series codename Southern Isles in the middle of this year, most likely Q2. I suggest waiting for these. Huge performance upgrades.

I'm building a new one, but no sooner than August or September. Not sure yet if I'm going with Intel or AMD. I do know that I'm going with at least 6 gigs of ram, anything else is overkill. Getting me a video card with HDMI-Out so I can hook it up to my HDTV and use that as my monitor when I'm playing the game.

well currently im running on 4g ram (not bad i know but), amd 3800+(single core) and ati radeon 3650 1gb. and i can have dificulty running oblivion and the fallout games. but that is mostly due to my cpu.

my new rig that i will spend $625 +SH&H on will have

AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition which seems to have a good chance to unlock to a quad
4gb ddr3 1333
ASUS M4A88TD-V mobo which can unlock cores and over clock
RAIDMAX HYBRID 2 RX-730SS 730W power supply
HIS H577FK1GD Radeon HD 5770 (Juniper XT) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5
COOLER MASTER HAF 922 case
CoolIT SYSTEMS ECO-R120 Advanced Liquid Cooling

buying a system with similar spces out right youll spend more around $1000 for but luckily for me i can build one on my own for almost half the price :celebration:

I got a new rig a few months ago that should probably be able to handle Skyrim at a decent rate. I'll likely have to get a new videocard though as I'm currently running with an AMD 4850.

Right now I have a good rig. Before Skyrim comes out I will drop 200 on the most bang for my buck DX11 card. Then sometime next spring I will probably update my mobo-ram-cpu. Just in time for some performance intensive mods to release.

i recommend AMD because it runs just as good and is much cheaper than Intel. this is in speculation with the Phenom II series. take that extra 100+ dollars you saved by not getting Intel and get you a decent video card to match the cpu.

as ive said before though i am hoping they make this game multi core friendly. or else will be stuck with a single core gasping for air wile 1-3 other cores twiddle their thumbs. but with advanced features like dynamic snow and flowing water i would guess that they are taking full advantage of multi cores.
