Your IQ

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 3:20 pm

The main problem with IQ is it can't really give a good idea of how smart a person is or rather that's just my opinion of it. Kept hearing that I needed to have an IQ of 130 to be considered "Normal" and still feel that way, but in the quote real world it's more like 90. Only IQ test I took was online and said I had an IQ of something like 88 to 93 or whatever it was so I don't really believe it.

Don't think i'm "EINSTEIN" material, but I would think that my IQ is atleast 100 or so since I can comprehend things some people shake their heads at.

85-115 indicates normal intelligence.

What do people mean by "taking a real IQ test?"

I've never taken any IQ test, real or otherwise. I doubt I'd score very high though - especially if maths plays a part.

Everyone at school went through one when I was 14. First time was 142. Then I took one when the resident psychologist at the youth ward of the hospital offered me one when I was 16. 142 again. Then one at the university ten years later, during some tests for a project. Another 142.
I think that narrows it down to a certain degree. ^_^
What do people mean by "taking a real IQ test?"

One taken at a psychologists office or by an institute. Not those absolutely ridiculous sites found on the web.

Accordingt to statistics, most of you are either lying or didn't take a real IQ test.

Here's a little hint if you have a high IQ: don't tell people your IQ points. People with an average IQ or lower will dislike you because no one likes to feel inferior, and smart people will distrust you and probably silently mock you. Also never mention your IQ in a job interview.

I've studied human intelligence extensively with extra focus on the difference between static intelligence and fluid intelligence. Regular IQ tests measure static intelligence.

I would write more but typing on my phone svcks. :P

My IQ is high enough, I'm going to contact my doctor to set up another test soon so I can see if I can apply for mensa. I doupt I'll score high enough since you need to be in the top 2% in the world to apply, but it doesn't hurt to try.

EDIT: ok I got my hands on a computer so I can type more. By the way, typing on a touch screen phone is horrible.

So, regular IQ tests measure your static IQ, which is similar to the processing power of a computer, it's how well you can use your head to process information. In a static IQ tests you will be asked to perform some basic math (usually involving percentages and such) to test your ability to work with numbers. You will be asked to look at numeric sequences and geometric objects and find patterns, also you will look at images and try to find inconsistencies, this test will measure logic. Then you repeat numbers and words to test your short term memory. There are a few more tests but I can't be bothered to write them down.

tl;dr: Your static IQ is very useful when dealing with problems within a specific field.

Fluid intelligence is our ability to learn new things and use them to solve varied problems. A person with a high fluid IQ is more likely to be successful in his or her work, because they can think and work outside their comfort zone, and because they are more open to new things.

A person with a high static intelligence but low fluid intelligence may excel at one field but wouldn't feel comfortable with working in something outside of their comfort zone.

Fluid IQ is unmeasurable, and I'm not so sure that static IQ can be measured either.

People with both high static IQ and fluid IQ will stand out as geniuses and visionaries. If they choose to apply themselves to a field that fits them.

Epicurus once said that there is nothing worse than to spend your life on a path that nature has rendered us unfit for. I think that's very true, even though you have a high IQ (both static and fluid) you won't excel unless you choose a path that suits you. :)

I usually get a snarky sort of enjoyment out of dissecting posts by people claiming they have an abnormally high IQ, but I'll refrain tonight on the basis that I don't have all night for one thread.
I do the same in my head. More along the lines of "Did you just seriously call yourself a genius while misspelling the word itself?" and others, but I don't want to single anyone out.

I got a good laugh when I saw someone post that their IQ was in the 170s and genius was much lower or something in some other thread. I was thinking, "Oh really now? Is it the 1950s again?"

Also, blah blah blah, I take IQ scores as seriously as the results from the "Who Will You Marry?" tests.

And I'm only a grammar cop with people who claim to be super intelligent.

Good quote. Now that you mentioned them, Mensa wanted me. I didn't want Mensa. I don't even know why anyone would want Mensa. Even if I felt that Mensa was a fine organisation, I'm not so sure I would have applied. I'm much too lazy to use my brains for the good of man. <_<
Anyway, that fluid IQ issue was news to me. Interesting stuff. I always felt that this system was lacking. Couldn't imagine why I should be so "intelligent"...
(Also, why should anyone get angry about random numbers people post on the net?)

Also, did you guys know that the average IQ is the same among male and female population of the area they are observed in, but men have a much higher range both up and down on the scale? ^_^

I took a real IQ test as well as a few cognitive tests (delivered by real doctors) over the years, the cognitive tests being for medical purposes. I'm smart! :nerd:

I took a real one back when I was 8. I scored a couple points below the Mensa cutoff.

WOW. Let's see if I can make a post here without it being deleted: I once sat a Mensa entrance exam and passed with a score within the 99th percentile. I was a member for 1 year but let the membership lapse because I didn't see the point in it.

*scans post*

Should be ok

IQ tests are meaningless to me. I don't care if you have an IQ of 2 or 200.

I do especially love technical fiction books(Books with good storylines but rely on lots and lots of research for the technical knowledge of the subject being wrote about).

Clive Cussler comes to mind here. I'm not big on fiction at all but I have enjoyed his books.

I don't want to know what my IQ is because knowing myself I would just brag about it to everybody and bore you to tears.

No idea, and I'm happy with it like that. As it is I know I'm at least a little above average, judging by my grades etc, but if I took an IQ test and it came out in the average range I might cry :P. Besides, if I did then my entire family would too, and I'm not having concrete proof that my sister's smarter than me.

I am probably in the average range. I just got where I am by working harder and having some drive.

Although I am fairly sure I am in, by some measures, the top 10% grade wise of my university course (and it isn't a bad university). But again, I just worked slightly harder than everyone else.

I quit school to go to work and figured everything I wanted to know could be found in books and selective studies, and I wouldn't be subject to university professors collective bias on life in general. But don't do what I did. Stay in school, but learn to chew the meat and spit out the bones, as it were.

So is there a genius among us?

Personally I have a shameful level 110 IQ

So if you know your IQ what is it?

Yes
It's embarassing. I had to take this long series of tests, and the school had pyschologists come in. My younger and youngest brother also had to take them.
People make too much of what Intelligence quotient tests show, or think that highly academicaly gifted people are superior. They are not, they make mistakes, too.
The most intelligent person in the room is the one who can solve the current crisis by judicious application of their knowlege. IQ tests mean jack squat to me.

If a pipe springs a leak in your home, and you lack the knowledge to repair it, and you hire a plumber, you bow financially to his superior knowledge.

Thank you. Sometimes intelligence means knowing when to call on someone who knows more than you about a specific thing, although perhaps your capacity for learning might seem higher than that person...in our perspective. I've seen a lot of intelligent people who couldn't smack their a$$ with both hands in a given situation. You [all] have too I'm sure.
