Depends on the character. All my characters pretty much think he's an [censored], the only difference is why or how they think he's an [censored]. My memory isn't so good, so I'm not gonna post a character-to-character retrospective here, but we can summarize nicely by saying: they all think he's an [censored].

EDIT: doesn't this Dunmer disappear from the game once we're done with the Tutorial? I don't know his name, otherwise I'd look this up on UESP.

My point is, if the OP's only impression of this dark elf is from the beginning of the game where he berates us...that sure is a different perspective from mine!

Play the Dark Brotherhood quest line. It's worth it. :)

The highlight of the game for some of my characters  . Apparentlyhttp://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Romlyn_Drethdoesn't fall too far from the tree either.

OH I see. Eradi~Kate will never finish DB, but maybe some future character who's really evil will.

I liked him so much I used him in my fan fic. Twice in fact. The first time showed how he got in that cell, and the second what happened after he got out.

Valen Dreth - nasty bit of work. He does indeed come back later in the game regarding the DB quest line - that's a good quest.

I hate the guy - he says nasty and shallow things about all races and genders. Oddly, we don't even know why he is in prison, much like ourselves. Food for thought.

In any case, I was glad to leave him behind! Who had the last laugh?

My last character (Li’l Bit) to go through the tutorial opened the cell doors after the Emperor left to let Valen Dreth out, but he would not budge from his fixed spot. So she blasted him with her fireball spell which didn’t bother him in the least. Then she played the disposition mini-game with him and got him from zero to 16. He actually smiled then. The only thing in his dialog menu was “Rumors.” Li’l Bit left him standing in the same spot when she went through the secret passage to follow the Emperor.

No he does not disappear. In fact there is a Dark Brotherhood quest to kill him.

No, no, no.

Clearly the tutorial is a Dark Brotherhood quest to kill Valen by making him disappear.

/Super-sarcasm.

You sound just like Valen!

Edit: Yeah...we got a little side tracked. Valen is an a-hole and let's leave it at that.

Everyone in the Imperial City knows that Valen Dreth was imprisoned due to his constant petty slurs directed at the city guards. The guards had enough of his vulgar insults, and thus threw him in prison.

DB questline was even more worth it with what you end up doing with him. Its a shame that theres no decapitation in Oblivion, his head would have looked good on my mantle in my Skingrad house.

He's adorable, and I presume, he has a unique speech for each player race, which is why eventually I plan to play game intro with each race just to hear his hilarious taunting.

If it wasn't for this thread, I would have never known that you get to meet him again later ingame, so that kinda spoiled things a bit for me, but no biggie - one more reason to join a certain faction and I eagerly await meeting my prison buddy again

By the time I re-visit Dreth most annoyance with him is long gone. I've been tempted to free him just to see what would happen....Does he stand in his cell yelling until killed? Never runs?

I once chased Perennia Draconis all across the land and nearly to the gates of Bruma, with her screaming help and murder, so maybe Dreth could do the same.

In the prison cell during the tutorial he is set to Essential. His disposition is zero. No matter what my character did to him - fire ball, fists - he would not fight back.
