Your Todd Interview

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:09 am

Theres been alot of interviews with Todd Howard on Skyrim here lately and i know alot of you can think of a few questions that you would love to ask the guy that never seemed to get asked.

My question?

What armour is the dovakiin wearing in his pics and trailer?
How intuitive can we expect armour and weapon crafting to be? (ie type, design. material, colour)
Will there be references to the Akiviri?

Better question is "what would he answer?".

About the interface, because its the only thing I see Beth doing that I don't understand. Its just keeps getting worse since MW.

Just remembered my BIG question.

Will there be a type of moral system?

I think the interface is beautiful.

"Will choices we make affect the game?"

"Will we be faced with any questions about morals, or will it be like the last games where quests are rarely anything more than chores of varying degrees of epicness?"

"Pauldrons? Seperate gloves? Clothes under armor? Robes over armor? Capes and cloaks? Can we wear a hooded object of clothing without the hood up?"

"If I make two dunmer characters, will they be exactly the same aside from looks until I begin to level them in different ways, or will there be ways to distinguish our characters from each other at the start other than picking different races?" (ie, will ALL male dunmer have the same stats until we start leveling them)

And yeah, I don't know what you're thinking but the interface in Morrowind was cluttered and sloppy. Oblivion's was far better and Skyrim's looks better still. And I'm a hardcoe Morrowind fan, that's probably the first bad thing I said about the game in a month here.

I'd ask him, "How many roads must a man walk down?"

Then I'd ask him for more clarification about the UI, too. It just sounds clunky and unwieldy on the PC.

I think the interface is beautiful.

I don't know if you play for pc, but beautiful is not the point. Function is, it will only take a few hours to get use to how cool it looks and then function will be all that matters. Look at Fallout for example, at first I thought oh cool I am looking at my pip boy neat. But after a few hours only its flaws did I notice. Only half the screen was used for the UI, it took a half second to load because of the animation were you have to look at your wrist, unlike the instant UI with MW or close to that with OB. There was not a single button to access your quests or the map, so there was alot of unnecessary button pressing. And because of the wasted screen space and use of a list view instead of a grid view, there was a lot of scrolling needed to see everything(and this is with Darn Mod). Speaking of mods that was the worse part of FO UI because of its special look it was not moddable like OB's, were a grid system could be added and the map could be expanded at least.

Now again with Skyrim, there may be a delay in assessing the UI because of the new look i.e instead of look at your wrist like the pip boy you look at the sky or the ground, a wasted half second and very annoying when your going back and forth between your map, etc, its sounds like because of the imbedded menus that the screen space might not be used well, and we don't know yet if there will be a one button hotkey for the map and journal like MW.
I play on a pc, pc's use windows, which can be resized etc for you purpose, MW had a pc interface. That was simple and did the job. I don't know yet if SR will do that, but Beth recent track record is not good. I hope I am wrong.

1: NPC functions in the economy; basically is there trade, drug trade, blackmarket goods, do they farm crops and sell them, do they buy things, banks, loans, ect and so on. Can i burn the crops and thus increase the price of food goods ect.

2: Cultural differences in regions and blantent racism; [censored] Todd you could do something REALLY EMOTIONALLY POWERFUL WITH THIS, refugee's from morrowind getting beaten and called racial slurs by a predominantly Nordic group.

  • Are you considering any kind of "survival"-type mode requiring eating, drinking, sleeping, similar to hardcoe mode in FNV?
  • Will there be opposing factions requiring the PC to make difficult choices (e.g., you lose out on certain spells or unique items if depending on which of the opposing factions you join ).
  • For those of us who may keep playing one playthrough for hundreds of hours, will new Radiant Story quests continue to spawn as the PC continues to interact with NPCs?

Assuming I didn't miss confirmation somewhere:

"Are cities going to be open like they were in Morrowind?"

I'm like 90% sure this was strongly implied. I'd put some money on the fact that they're indeed open.

Will every single quest be finishable if the questgiver is killed?

Do the NPCs, who 'inherit" the family business spawn during the game, or are they there from the beginning?

Are the non-hostile NPCs infinite?

How many of the quests allow by non-linear design to be completed in different ways? Are there real consequences attached to our choices, so as different playthroughs would trigger different branches of the story?

Do you have the means to implement a system where the news spread across the map realistically? I ask this because I'd like to have the chance to kill 20 guards in town A, and then ride to the next town B and have a drink at the tavern like nothing happened, until a courier comes in real time to bring the latest news, and only then the guards will start searching if the criminal is in their town. I want isolated settlements (like in the mountains or small fishing villages) to receive the news quite rarely (or never) so I could always find places where my insanely high bounty doesn't matter at all. Is the real time movement of people, rumors and merchandise one of your development concerns to make the world more believable or do you think this is a marginal issue?

2. Vampires and Werewolves?

3. Does the telekinesis spell have any combat uses now?

Is the loot scaled to the character like in Oblivion?
Will there be a lockpicking minigame?
If dialogue is in realtime now, can lockpicking be in realtime too?
Can we have more speechcraft options in dialogue, like in Fallout?
