Your TOP 10 Video Games of All Time

Post » Tue Sep 22, 2015 10:54 am

I try not to over-think things.

I wrote down what I thought "at the moment" and moved on. You bet I could list whole different list of ten on another day. I've thought of other games I did not list and could have. Instead of worrying about accuracy or completeness, I just wrote :)

Bruh, I did it on my list. Don't you see those personal preferences? My opinion is fact. :P

Anyways, I forgot to mention Halo 1 & 2 on my list. Never had so much fun with MP like I did back then...ah, good times.

If I may interject, I think it just gets a little confusing when people present an opinion without the traditional "I think" or "I believe" or any similar opinion-qualifier. The internet's an informal and confusing place, though, so many just shrug it off. Just some cyber musing of mine. :P

Then again, if we said "I believe" all the time, we might as well just throw hyperbole out the window!

I guess...I think it's pretty much assumed that when you say anything, especially on here, it's that persons opinion. I tell you what, I'm not going to do the above said every time I write my views on something lol, not something I'm worried about.

right now, with the games i have played, i'd go with- tes3-5, halo1-3, fallout3/nv, half-life2(orangebox, preferably;)) and, either, guitarhero2, sc:chaostheory, riddike:athena, doom3bfg, condemned, bioshock or arkham city.

also, i have a feeling RDR would be on this list if i ever get around to playing it and i'm about to take on thewitcher2 soon.

Catagory One, surefire favorites:

  • Modded TES4 Oblivion. I consider my ongoing 2k-hour second play-through of this title my greatest gaming accomplishment to-date, and don't expect to surpass it during what remains of my gaming lifetime. (Bear in mind that I'm in my mid sixties and not in the best health so likely don't have a great many years of gaming ahead of me under the best of circumstances.) It hits many of the right chords with me, and I find I can easily play to the game's strengths while minimizing its admitted weaknesses. I've been on sabbatical from Oblivion off and on for the better part of a year now, but that's due to health issues rather than a lessening of interest. Were mods removed from the equation Oblivion would still make the list but might appear in a lower position.
  • TES2 Daggerfall. I have played this game off and on since it was new and shiny, and have a currently running play-through in which my avatar is tackling the Main Quest for the first time since my original 1996/7 play-through. I find it the perfect foil to either of the two most recent TES titles, and regret that gamesas did not retain more of its fundamental attributes in subsequent titles.
  • Minecraft up through commercial release 1.6.4. Had this thread appeared even a year ago Minecraft would likely be in position two. As much as I enjoy some post 1.6.4 changes, a few rub me the wrong way. Even so, it's a darn good title with lots of playability.
  • Everquest I & II. How could I not include these titles after spending the better part of my life in Norrath from 1999 up until 2009? EQ2 eventually became too raid and uber-gear centric for me. By the time I purchased PC Oblivion GOTY in 2009 I was ready to abandon ship. But boy did I derive immense pleasure from the franchise for a number of years!

Category Two, short term favorites:

  • Wizardry 7, Crusaders of the Dark Savant.
  • Eye of the Beholder I.

I loved these titles back in the day, but once finished with my initial play-throughs never revisited them.

Category Three, nostalgic favorites:

  • Meridian59. The first modern MMO. I stumbled on and was accepted in the final beta for Meridian just after joining net in 1997. Some of my fondest gaming memories stem from my time there. Yet I held a love-hate relationship with Meridian, discovering early on that unavoidable non consensual PVP was not for me. I was ready to jump ship when EQ1 launched circa 1999.

Category Four, honorable mention:

  • Planescape: Torment. My then boss lent me this game back when it was fairly current. Sadly, he soon moved out of the area, forcing me to give it up. (And no, I do not and will not pirate software.) As such I can not give it a fair assessment. But judging by the little I played I can't help but feel it would have made the list.

I should probably add WoW and EQ2 to my list as well, only 10 is not enough! :P

Should have put ODST on my list. For Once Bungie actually learned how to scale difficulty, and not make the NPC's Bullet Sponge.

If I may ask a follow-up question...

How many of your "All-Time Greatest Games" do you still play? Percentages are fine :)

I am finding it harder and harder to play some my favorite older games.

1. Morrowind - still play

2. Skyrim - still play

3. Baldur's Gate 2 - about once every 3 or 4 years

4. Knights of the Old Republic 1 - not played in 6 years

5. Deus Ex 1 - not played in 13 years (have probably stopped playing)

6. Dragon Age: Origins - still play

7. Oblivion - still play

8. Fallout 3 - still play

9. Planescape: Torment - not played in 10 years (have probably stopped playing)

10. Neverwinter Nights 1 - not played in 6 years

Note: KotOR 1 is an unplayable slideshow on my current computer. Same thing with Neverwinter Nights 1. So those two would have been "still play" if I could get the damn things to work.

100%. There's even a rare time where i have a game file going on every single one of my favourite games at once at that point in my life. Sometimes i play one for a few hours, then jump to another one.

I'm not sure if this was to a specific member, but regardless it's a good question so it deserves an answer

I should preface this by saying I probably don't play games as much as I used.I probably played games about 30 hours a week during 2006 - 20012, but sadly it's a rather more abstemious 5 - 10 hours with life occluding my passage into the fantastical.

1 Fallout: New Vegas - I still play it but on a spasmodic basis, probably averaging about 5 - 8 hours on a month.
2 Fallout 3 - I've finally been burned out on it, I still play it but it's a rare occasion.Though that will be rectified when the hype builds for Fallout 4.
3 Bioshock: Infinite - Loved it initially along with the DLCs, but I haven't played this game since the credits for burial at sea 2 rolled. But it's such a salient game that i'll most likely revisit Columbia in the future.
4 Fallout 1 - I still play this on a weekly/biweekly basis
5 Metal Gear Solid 2 - Same story as Bioshock: Infinite
6 The walking dead season 1 - *In a poignant and forlorn voice* I've made my choices now it's up with me to live with them
7 Final Fantasy 6 - I haven't played it in years but I will return to it as some point.
8 Mass Effect 2 - I only recently finished Mass Effect 2, one of the games I'm most agog to play again.
9 Super Mario Galaxy - Loved it but I don't plan on playing it anytime soon.
10 The Last of Us/Fallout 2 - Loved the last of us but I don't plan on playing it anytime soon as for fallout 2 I play it on a weekly basis.
I probably only play 3 out of 11 games on a consistent basis.

A half, roughly. Maybe more than half, depending on how you count. For example, I listed Pokemon HG/SS, but it was an arbitrary pick and really I should have listed all main games. Because of the nature of the series, I have little reason to go back to gen IV in gen VI.

Then there's Torment, which is about as replayable as a good book, so I may want to get back to it sometime in the next decade... But not right now.

Some of them aren't that old, like Mass Effect, so even though I haven't played them very recently, I still count them as active. After all, it's impossible to play all the games all the time, breaks are inevitable.

Apart from Silent Hill 2(which I played a couple of times in the last 10 years), I can say I played all of them in the last two years and I was planning to play Silent Hill 2 since Silent Hills canceled recently.

Compatibility of some are breaking apart, Populous and Requiem in particular. Thankfully, I know my way around Windows.

My interest in game preservation and my love for them are the main reasons for still playing them. Thief got an engine update after like 10 years. Postal 2 got an expansion pack just recently. For others, maybe GOG can help. You can help too:

If you ever consider it, there's a nice port of Kotor out for the iPad. I just finished a playthrough of it last Summer. Works great. And it beats trying to get the old Xbox to run it.

The movement takes some getting used to, I should add. It is the iPad after all.

I play Morrowind very often, not very longs sessions but probably 50-60 hours every year. It's been always installed on my HDD on every computer since 2003.

Jade Empire gets replayed every 3 years or so... last time in 2012 I think. Great game, unique atmosphere.

The "Broken Sword" series I replay before each new game, last year I replayed 1-2-3-4 in a row before I purchased the new installment.

GTA San ANdreas I haven't played in a long time inded but that's because I have a huge backlog and I'm still in GTA IV and haven't touched the episodes, so it's more like I don't want too much GTA overdose but San Andreas is still my favorite.

My other favorites (Mass Effect, POP, Gothic, Civ 4, AC2) are indeed long time since I've played them but that may change anytime when nostalgia hits, for instance I have replayed Gothic 3 last year after the Risen 3 disappointment.

SO in percents I'd say 10% of my top 10 is played regularly, and other 20% is played once in a while.
