None
I hate the way FO3 deals with companions.
They are rather bland, don't have any or a very limited backstory...
and the iconic ones are overpowered and nearly essential.
What I do like is the karma requirements..
However if I would use them: Fawkes and Dogmeat.. (cliched... moi ? )

Brisa Almodovar (Amata's cousin) and A1.5F, a female cyborg. Both from mods. On my next playthrough, I'm planning on having Brisa and either Jennifer or Victoria.

One of my characters is currently rocking Jericho, Clover and Dogmeat. She wears Tribal Power Armor and a Sheriff's Hat. :mohawk:
But my favorite is either Charon or Jericho.

Can't play without http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/images/17442-1-1331392918.jpg but my second favorite companion changes frequently. Right now it's a tie between a twin I made of my old character and my best friend Petra.

I am currently using Sydney and Brisa Almodovar with Bittercup thrown in as an alternate but I will have to start another character so I can use the Kicken Kittens as my only companions.

Haven't used many of the official companions yet. Only tried Dogmeat and Fawks the first play through. My current play through, I'm playing a neutral character so far who hired Sargent RL-3 and with mods recruited a good portion of Rielly's Rangers, Sydney, and Somah. Spaz is starting his own small army. :P

Dogmeat. The humanoid companions tend to get killed rather easily in my experience.

It' is'nt worth having companions in FO3. So I don't have them.
You don't need them, so why bother.

They walk into nearly every shot you take, you can't use wide spread weapons near them, and they can die.
Fawkes is the strongest, but you can't bulletstorm a area. And he makes the game lag and crash when he walks behind you.
Dogmeat is least likely to die of the others, but he still cramps your style. And he blocks doorways, which is very annoying.
Jericho is awesome, but he walks onto every single mine and trap possible.
Charons ok. Never impressed me much. Don't like him.
Sergeant RL-3 is awesome but I don't want him to get hurt. He tends to take his own path round things.
Star Paladin Cross is strong and powerful. But she's a bit annoying.
Clovers creepy and stupid. I had her once, and the 3rd time she walked so close behind me she was pushing me, and said 'I love you', I killed her.

You go to sleep in your house in megaton, they cram themselves into your bedroom, then Wadsworth comes in and tries to do his job, and they all get stuck, unless Wadsworth can get out.

Sure you can't do a slew of things like use grenades and mines with companions in combat, but that can be part of the fun if you're up for the challenge of keeping your troops alive and still get the job done. And occasionally they do help.
You sure Fawk's isn't just following too close, bumping into the camera? You can tell him to hang back a little farther. At least he didn't lag my first play through

Lol. I remember, one time I had a bunch of companions, Dogmeat, Clover, Charon, RL-3 (I looked it up) and I went to sleep in my Megaton bed. FFS they all tried to cram in the room with me. Almost frustrated to tears, I ended up firing Charon and Clover on the spot in hopes that they would move away from the bedroom door, but they couldn't, as they were blocked by Dogmeat and RL-3, so they walked in place. Nice. Meanwhile my buddy is on the couch laughing so hard he's crying. I pulled out a fatman and put one right between Clover's eyes, and the death animation shows all of us dead except for Dogmeat. Good times.

That's tight. O_O And ouchey, lol.

The worst was when Fawkes and Dogmeat crammed themselves into my bedroom, then Wadsworth came in, got stuck.
I tried firing Fawkes and Dogmeat, but they could'nt get out.

I reloaded, then when Fawkes came towards me, I fired him. He still got stuck in the door when Wadsworth came in.
After a point and some shoving from me and jumping on the desk to let Wadsworth through, he left.
I then fired Dogmeat because he stood across the door as I tried to leave, and Wadsworth tried to go out, and they got stuck again.

Trying to keep idiot companions from dying is not fun, in the least.
I should be able to use all my weapons and bulletstorm a area, without them walking straight into my attacks, and walk into every single landmine possible.

Fawkes folllows so close you can see his shadow. He hits you with his gun, nearly. When he runs at stuff, his gun goes through you and hits you.
It's like, he runs off to attack someone, phew, I can breath, oh look the suns there, he must have blotted it out of my view, comes back. Oh no, he's back.
I have no patience to talk to Fawkes when he's following so close, close to killing him myself, when he does that.
Before I get the urge to kill him, I will talk to him, though, this time.

None.
The engine has never handled companions well (Oblivion & Morrowind also had this problem). They behave like idiots, and nothing I do will change it.
I'm gettiing shot at, therefore they stand around looking stupid.
I'm trying to get a long range sniper shot on a target, so of course, they charge the target right in front of my rifle.

I've therefore modded them out of my game (they exist, but as NPCs only, with no special companion dialog and normal NPC stats).

AFAIK, there is a dialogue option to ask Fawks to hang back farther when following or are you saying he follows too close even then?

With mods? Random Enclave soldiers that I pick up. I'm particularly partial to Tesla Troopers.

Without mods? Eh...I guess RL-3 and Clover probably.

Fawkes does the exact same to me. And then randomly he will turn and try to kill me or followers, or all of us. Every time. Hence my hatred for Fawkes.

I barely use it, because I forget it's there. I used it once or twice. I don't use the order options much.
He also went crazy once, when I did use it. Told him to back off, then later, for no reason started shooting up underworld as we walked through it.

Well, it is only my second play through and Fawks did okay first time around for me, but if there is random behavior for him, that makes it all the more interesting. Although of course if he does any of the crap you guys mentioned, in my game, his pants is gonna 'splode with a bottle cap mine.
