YouTube avatar quality

Is there any trick to saving an image file so that when you upload it as a YouTube avatar it won't look blurry with artifacts?

I resized the avatar I want to an 88x88px JPG with as small a file size as I could, but YouTube apparently thinks nothing is small enough and crap-ifies everything I upload.

Resizing in GIMP, resolution is 88x88. They look fine until I upload it in the YouTube avatar options.

88x88 resolution? Resolution is measured in pixels per inch. (ppi) Make sure its set to 72. Youtube won't take the resolution down any further...but its a known issue to happen with Youtube Avatars.

Your best bet is to stick with a clean avatar; one with solid colors.

88x88 is the native YouTube avatar resolution. I dunno how to set ppi...

For example, the avatar I use on this site goes from http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/3565/testkd.jpg to http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/260/test2vyb.jpg.

I barely see a difference. Mind you, im looking at it from 3 feet away on an HD TV.

I checked the ppi. Its 72...

Its a common issue with youtube. Have you ever seen a sharp avatar thats a picture? Not a logo?

That's lame. I dunno why they need to further compress a 6kb image, when their avatar "maximum file size" is 2MB. (according to the settings page) <_<

YouTube is not the only one, Yahoo like to degenerate any picture I upload as its avatar regardless of size/format/whatever.
