Zardoz

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:23 pm

Recently I stumbled across a movie trailer for the 1974 film Zardoz. Directed by John Boorman and starring Sean Connery (in a loincloth!), Zardoz tells a Wizard of Oz-influenced story about a post-apocalyptic Earth inhabited by the "Brutals", who are ruled by the "Eternals". The "Eternals" use certain "Brutals", called "Exterminators", as "the Chosen", a warrior class that devoutly follows the god Zardoz, a huge, flying, hollow stone head and its doctrine of using the gun to "purify" the world of all life. While very strange and admittedly campy, Zardoz is quite an interesting film with political philosophies that can only be perceived by an open, acute mind.

Have any of you ever seen it? Here's its very bizarre trailer; prepare to be blown away in many different ways.

Yes, I have seen it. Sean Connery in thigh high boots and a loincloth. What's not to like?
I also recommend Deathrace 2000, the 1975 classic, with David Carradine.

Yeah, its pretty terrible. This coming from a huge Connery fan. Want to see a good Connery movie, check out; The Hill, The Man Who Would Be King, The Wind and The Lion, Time Bandits and some more popular ones you've probably already seen, like; The hunt For Red October etc.

Looks more like a red nappy. Also looks like men didn't shave/wax/pluck themselves hairless like a little boy back in 1974.

It's difficult to comprehend that Connery went from James Bond to "Zed the conqueror in dominatrix boots" and back to James Bond.

Some time ago, I put it in this forum as one of my preferred movie
Zardoz is a great movie, definetly political message not that hidden. John Boorman is also the realisator of Delivrance (another great movie with a funny music), Excalibur and the Emerald Forest (not the best)

I've wanted to see Zardoz ever since I first heard of it years ago. It sounds awful - I bet it's hillarious.

lol Zardoz was cool..me old mucka Sean in his nappy with bandolier and six gun. Classic stuff.

There was a better one much later which was like a High Noon remake in space. Having to defend a space station from incoming bad guys...think it was called Outlands. That was better and less trippy ;)

Outlander yeah, basically Sean Connery as a space sheriff with a sawn-off shotgun shooting people in space.

Outland was soooooooooooo lame ! To link Sean Connery movies with software, one excellent movie "Hunt for the Red October", there was later a game on Atari ST, very good.
Basically, it's a russian submarine defecting Russia and passing to USA. The funny part is to avoid the detection by US AND the hunt by russians keeping as much as possible silent, using sea canyon etc... The russians tactics was very tricky.

Funny I thought Hunt for Red October was lame. Das Boot is waaaaaayyyyyyyy better and a lot more tense.

It was so campy it was hilarious. Why Connery did it, I'll never know, but he's got cojones for prancing round in that outfit, and sticking with the movie.
I suppose we all have to laugh at ourselves sometimes.

Seeing the trailer a while back left my brother and I loudly shouting ZARDOZ in a booming voice periodically for months to come. We've been scarred.
