Zenimax shot themselves in the foot

Post » Tue Feb 11, 2014 11:18 pm

Well the beta weekend is over and the press have all given their opinion on the game, which I'm sure most of us have seen, was mostly negative. The reoccurring theme in these reviews were " Its not like Skyrim."

Does anyone else think a lot of this hate and disappointment from both the critics and fans could have been avoided if Zenimax never advertised the game as just Skyrim but online? Of course, a lot of the flak this game has taken was unavoidable, a lot of people just cringe when they hear the words MMO and Elder Scrolls together.

But from the beginning of development, Zenimax have kind of pushed the MMO fans to the side. focusing on pulling RPG fans into the idea of "Skyrim with friends" or "Skyrim Online" . Now the RPG fans are angry because the game is a different genre than they expected, and a lot of MMO fans wont even give this game a chance because Zenimax don't even like to call their game an MMO and try to avoid labels people associated with it.

This game is the perfect blend of both MMO and TES, and that is what it should have been advertised as because MMO purists don't want a dumbed down game, and TES purists don't want a linear unfluid mess. Trying to appeal to both player bases was impossible and now they have sadly disappointed both.

And the critics who only played an hour or two of the game led to a lot of misinformed reviews which didn't help. (looking at you Angry Joe)

Any other opinions on why this game was so badly received?

Angryjoe got to level 8 and quit, I don't think his review was anywhere from relevant....

I mean I can understand if the early game would feel linear but you didn't even get far enough to Pvp or go to your racial area and just shoot it down.

Also the "omg 49 cents a day so much money" and the "not better graphics then skyrim" arguments are extremely silly.

In most interviews Zenimax would make that specific claim or variations of it quite frequently.

Most people have no experience with subscription MMOs, or had a bad experience (modern WoW, SWTOR) and now just think "cost less? must be better"

Sadly his view count is already in the hundreds of thousands. Just to clarify I dont hate the guy, I enjoy most of his reviews. The sad thing is he has such a dedicated fan base and even though he is quite vocally against MMOs they still trusted his opinion on this.

I know over on the WoW forums people are kvetching repeatedly because they expected it to be a WoW killer.

That's ALL anyone wants out of this genre... the game that will cause WoW to end.

This isn't that game. That game is WoW itself.

After 9 years and something I'm more than ready to quit.

Ah, never saw those.

There are certainly some elements of Skyrim I'd like to see adopted in ESO, but I made some of those observations during the beta.

They did? When or where did they say that ESO is "Skyrim Online"?

to be perfectly honest I nearly quit the beta after the first day, the begining is too linear, filled entirely with ridiculously brain dead unchallenging fetch quests. Its only when you get precisely to lvl 8-10 that things start looking up wth stronger enemies, a bigger landmass to explore etc...

Why, why, WHY do mmorpg's INSIST on making noob islands????????? THEY ARE NOT FUN. No one has ever liked a noob island in the entire history of mmorpgs! (i hope). You KNOW your on it, and you know nothing you do matters until your OFF it, and it blows. It Doesnt take 8 hours to learn the game, it takes 20+ if not more (talking economics, items etc...), and the basics take about 15 mins to learn. So whats the use of the noob island? From a game design point of view, i j u s t d o n t g e t i t

Ugh they never said it was skyrim online. They said they took features of it like the compass.

People around here said it should be like that, not them. Please correct me with a source.

the only problem zenimax had is with people not being option to change. you have mmo people not wanting it to be too much like skyrim and you want skyrim people not wanting it to be too much like an mmo. people cry they want new while asking for the same old same old. its a funny thing to watch over and over

So you expected an MMO where you must go back to your "favorite" windows everytime you want to use another spell then the one you've used ?

Also skyrim wasn't like oblivion but I don't remember anyone crying about it when skyrim as been released.

So far this is my opinion on who will like the game and who will not.

You will enjoy the game if your an elderscroll fan who is playing MMO's regulary

You will not enjoy the game if your an elderscroll fan who never wanted to play a MMO

You will not enjoy the game if your an elderscroll fan who whish to be overpowered as he where in skyrim with is blacksmith/enchanter melee toon who can 1 shot anything with is toon in a single player game.

The reason wow is going to die is not because of that, its just it is an old game and a lot of people that have been playing it have played it for years and made life time friends on that game, I mean wow has a special place in my heart I have many memories in Azeroth and I think the game is wonderful, Not to say I don't have high hopes for ESO, I AM really hyped for ESO, even more after last weekend :)

I really didn't like the opening cold harbor area, but after that I didn't mind the linear starting zones. I guess it's just because I'm so used to doing them, I enjoyed the story so much, and I still couldn't believe I was playing the game.

"Feels like" is the hard hitter. Should have been "Looks / Sounds like" is way more suiting! Background of MMOs & ES:III-V. They don't want MMO label, then why did they make an MMO ? Everything about it is mostly clone MMO standards. Worst of it all, Spit in the Face cash cow "Buy Imperial Ed."! LMAO

It's only strong suit is it's LICENSED under ES! Take that away .. what do you have?

Because you have to teach new players how to play the game, not everyone is a gaming god like you, they want to sell this game to people who have never played a MMO before, and if they do not give them guidance and hand holding then some of those players will get frustrated and quit.

The subscription model was the normal model until only two or three years ago, so I think it is fair to say that most MMO players have paid a sub before. UO launched in 97 or 98 I think so for roughly 11 or 12 years of the last 16 or so years subscriptions were the rule.

Yes but a large part of this games fan base has never touched an MMO before, or haven't since WoW.
